If 1967 was the Summer Of Love, then 2007 will be the Summer Of Cynically Large Concerts About Issues And Stuff, with acts playing Live Earth to save the world and also playing the Princess Diana tribute concert to save, um…
But two massive Wembley-held all-star concerts happening within a couple of months of each other hasn't been so good for the Princess Diana show – rumour has it that it's been hard finding big enough acts for the show, with most high-profile artists deciding that they'd get more exposure by playing a global event about a serious issue than a UK-only show about a dead bulimic woman. But the Princess Diana concert organisers have pulled together and secured a new raft of cutting edge talent to play the show – like Lily Allen, Kanye West and Rod Stewart. OK, so maybe not that cutting edge.
Thank goodness for the Princess Diana tribute concert. Not only will it provide warmth and shelter for thousands of bemused Daily Express readers, but it's also just about the only event happening this year that makes Live Earth look sensible. Because, although Live Earth is ridiculously hypocritical, at least it's about something vaguely important. Unlike the Princess Diana concert.
When the creepy Princess Diana concert was announced last year, it looked set to be 2007's Live Aid – and the thousands of genuinely odd people who still call Diana 'the people's princess,' have illuminated displays of Princess Diana dinnerplates in their living rooms and still cry when they hear Candle In The Wind, the word 'candle' or some wind quickly snapped up all the first-run tickets. The Princess Diana concert looked set to be a success.
But then Live Earth was announced and all the famous people decided that singing to save the world from climate change would probably sell more records than singing about a woman that almost had it off with David Hasselhoff and then died in a car crash a decade ago leaving behind an insufferable girl-dumper and a ginger tittysqueezer.
Madonna chose Live Earth, as did Spinal Tap and all manner of other famous performers, leaving hardly any big names to play for Princess Diana. But now it has been announced that the Princess Diana tribute concert has been bolstered by some new names, as MSNBC reports:
Kanye West, Rod Stewart and Lily Allen have been added to the lineup of artists for a summer concert in memory of Princess Diana. The July 1 show at Wembley Stadium also includes Duran Duran, Elton John, Joss Stone and Pharrell Williams. Princes William and Harry have planned the concert as a tribute to their mother, who died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997. It marks her 46th birthday on July 1 as well as the 10th anniversary of her death.
Also performing at Princess Diana's concert will be Bryan Ferry and Andrew Lloyd Webber. So that means – to mark the death of a posh woman still bizarrely loved by some of the public – people have paid £45 to see…
An incomprehensibly babbling yokel,
A man who loves the Nazis,
A man who possibly owns Nazi art,
A man who dresses up as Jesus,
A man who hates Jesus,
A band who nobody cares about and, wonderfully,
A man who repeatedly vocalises his wishes to have sex with the woman that Princess Diana's husband had an affair with.
Oh, and Pharrell.
Fitting, really.

What a sad day. I may have a piece of toast off my Diana plate and a cup of tea out of my Diana mug but I don’t know if I can bring myself to open my very last carton of Diana magarine. Better go and set the video as I don’t want to miss Candle in the Wind.

PS A quick look at the telly seems to show a lot of empty seats.

In addition if you read the readers comments in the Telegraph or the Mail you will suprised just how many of Middle England detest the Royal Family. Having executed Charles 1 why did we ever let them back.

I watched it from when Orson played till the end and I thought they were all pretty good. Diana did so much good for so many causes so why not have a fundraising event in her name? Its gonna do a lot more than if it were in my name…

Yes Diana’s done plenty for people, she was obviously a very caring & kind person, but c’mon, it’s been 10 years & people are still standing in Wembley stadium swaying along to P Diddy (who is American, not British) singing about how he misses the old princess of wales, or else cramped behind their tvs weeping!
I agree with Jec that a fundraising event would be much better. Diana was in favour of most charities so how’s about raising some money for them in her honour rather than filling out the Wembley stadium (almost) to play a big concert “celebrating her life” a decade after her death?
Buck yourselves up Jesus Christ!

Please visit the new site for all the latest Kym Marsh news and pictures… You may have noticed that Kym Marsh is now Kym Ryder! During Kym’s solo recording career, Kym stayed with the name Marsh because everyone knew her as Kym Marsh from Hear’Say, but when she established herself as an actress, confirmed by landing a top role as ‘Michelle Connor’ in Coronation Street, she felt the time was right to use her ‘real’ name.
