Most kids these days don't realise that Michael Jackson was once a superstar singer; they just think he's that nice squeaky man who absolutely doesn't want to show them porn, feed them Jesus Juice or molest them in any way.
Now, though, Michael Jackson is toying with the idea of returning to his day job of releasing mostly disappointing new albums every few years, so he's going to need help reminding people that Michael Jackson used to sell millions of records and that Michael Jackson was once so famous that he had his own film where he turned into a car and did a dance with a big plasticine rabbit. The World Music Awards is only to happy to provide that help for Michael Jackson, and in two weeks he'll be coming to London to be given a Diamond Award for being quite good 20 years ago.
Michael Jackson has something of a chequered history in London. Sometimes London loves him and sometimes it hates him. At one point, Michael Jackson even wanted to live in London, possibly until he discovered that laws about making giraffes swim about in their own blood are somewhat tighter in Britain than elsewhere. But Michael Jackson tends to have a rum old time in London, either getting mobbed by swarms of people who probably thought that the crazy woman releasing doves at the end of the Michael Jackson trial wasn't a nutter, or having his Brits performance of Earth Song interrupted by him out of Pulp wiggling his skinny bottom around.
In fact that was one of the last times that Michael Jackson made a public appearance in Britain; following that he went into the less obvious worlds of dangling babies from balconies, going through a lengthy child molestation trial and larking around Bahrain dressed as a woman. But now it's been announced that Michael Jackson is going to return to doing what Michael Jackson does best: whispering "I love you very much" insincerely at awards ceremonies – he's going to be presented with a diamond award at the World Music Awards next month, as This Is London reports:
Pop icon Michael Jackson is to make his first public appearance in Britain in nine years when he attends the World Music Awards in London in two weeks. The star, who has recently been living in Ireland, will receive a Diamond Award, which recognises artists who have sold more than 100 million albums, at the Earls Court Arena on November 15. Past recipients of the award include Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi and Celine Dion.
Finally! Michael Jackson is ready to claim his place as being just as good as Celine Dion and Bon Jovi. Despite the fact that you've never even heard of them, the World Music Awards are the planet's most-watched music awards, and this year they'll be presented by Lindsay Lohan, provided she hasn't been knocked sideways by asthma, dehydration or acne, that is. In addition to this, being the star of the World Music Awards will really go some way to reintroduce Michael Jackson as the superstar recording artist he once was. Maybe Michael Jackson will even take the chance to perform a song from his forthcoming new album, or maybe we'll see a new Michael Jackson duet with 50 Cent or Kanye West or the dead Pope.
Or maybe, you know, it'll all be a disappointing and confusing anticlimax. Who the hell knows?
