Put yourself in the shoes of Michael Jackson. You’ve recently been acquitted of child molestation charges and – although the integrity of your reputation is still in doubt – you’re slowly trying to make the world forget all those horrible allegations made against you.
Then, on your first trip to London since your child abuse trial ordeal, what’s the very first thing you decide to do? Go and watch a musical about a group of boys jumping around, of course.
Whether he watches boy musicals or not, Michael Jackson (CDs) can count on one thing wherever he is in the world –
an army of crying, dove-releasing fanatics. They are the people who
scream "I love you" at him when he’s dangling a baby off a balcony, and
they are also the only people that didn’t snigger at the message on
Jackson’s website comparing his acquittal with the release of Nelson
Mandela.
So when word spread that not only was Michael in London –
ostensibly to record Hurricane Katrina fundraiser From The Bottom Of My Heart – he was also going to see the theatre
production of Billy Elliot in the Victoria Palace theatre, they did the
only thing they could – mobbed the shit out of him.
The actual ferocity of the mobbing varies depending on which reports you read. American sources are claiming that the wild pack of mobbers endangered the lives of Jackson’s children as the pushed the singer over, while The Sun says that Michael stood on top of his car and had a bit of a sing-song.
And if one day of frenzied mobbing wasn’t enough, last night
Jackson decided to take his family on a trip around Madame Tussaud’s, and exactly the same thing happened.
Ending with a Michael Jackson/waxworks joke is too easy. Make your own up.
