Poor old Isaiah Washington – any minute now he's going to learn that the only thing harder than being a black TV actor in Hollywood is being a black TV actor in Hollywood who can't stop howling the word "faggot!" every two seconds.
Last week ABC stopped toying with Isaiah Washington and finally told him that he'd been fired from Grey's Anatomy, months after he angrily called gay co-star TR Knight a "faggot" during an on-set scuffle. Now the news has finally settled in, Isaiah Washington is ready to make his first statements about his Grey's Anatomy dismissal. And, unusually, Isaiah Washington's statements contained actual soberly-discussed examinations of the events surrounding the sacking, rather than Isaiah just tilting his head to the sky and roaring the word "Faggots!" at God for six minutes straight until all the buttons popped off his shirt.
Recent history has shown that racial or sexual discrimination is the new murder. Between Mel Gibson and Michael Richards and Don Imus and Jade Goody, the world has learnt that you're not allowed to discriminate against Jews, black people and whatever the hell a 'Fuckawallah' is. That only left the world with women, homosexuals, the Chinese and poor people to discriminate against – and we'll be darned if Isaiah Washington didn't go and make sure that he could put homosexuals out of reach as well.
You know what happened with Isaiah Washington already – Isaiah got in a fight with a Grey's Anatomy co-star and then called another co-star a "faggot" so violently that the co-star decided that he really was gay. Then, fighting to save his career after the media discovered what had happened, Isaiah Washington apologised, then he apologised again but meant it a bit more, then he decided to say sorry to some gays. Following that, Isaiah Washington went to gay rehab until he was well enough to make a bunch of toe-curling adverts about how much gay people rule.
But even that wasn't enough to secure a future on Grey's Anatomy, and last week Isaiah Washington was sacked from the show. Isaiah's immediate response was a cryptic statement saying "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore," which didn't really explain a lot but was a slightly more apt movie quote to use than "Steely Dan can gargle my balls" which we're led to believe was his plan B.
Now the dust has settled, though, Isaiah Washington has put his thoughts in order a little more and has spoken at length about his feelings over the sacking. Oddly enough, he's not best pleased. Hollywood.com quotes:
"I'm saddened by the outcome. I did everything that the producers and the network asked me to do. I came back under great duress and stress and thought I was doing the job I was hired to do. Shonda Rhimes called me on Thursday of last week and told me that I would not be returning to the show. Just like she personally called me and invited me to the show. It was full circle."
But Isaiah Washington shouldn't worry because, regardless of his regrettable actions in the past, Grey's Anatomy has a history of turning its actors into stars. Patrick Dempsey has used Grey's Anatomy to get roles in films like Freedom Writers and Katherine Heigl is the star of Knocked Up, so the future looks bright for Isaiah Washington. He'll easily be the most famous person ever to clean your car, for example.
