Whew, they've finally gone – last night David and Victoria Beckham arrived in Los Angeles to begin their new American adventure; David Beckham as a multi-millionaire sportsman and Victoria Beckham as his annoyingly squawky underfed wife.
"What?" you're probably thinking, "David and Victoria Beckham basically just got on a plane from Heathrow to Los Angeles and this constitutes news somehow?" – but trust us, it is news. Not only was the sight of David and Victoria Beckham stepping out of LAX airport the symbolic beginning of their new lives as fame-hungry American celebrities in the making, but it's also actually news in itself. For instance, the Beckhams' flight to Los Angeles marked the first time ever that David Beckham didn't try to board the plane by crawling down the check-in desk conveyor belt, plus it was such a special occasion that – just for once – Victoria Beckham checked herself in as an actual passenger instead of as a piece of hand luggage.
You might not know this but David Beckham, his wife Victoria and their children Romeo, G-Man and Cowabunga have been planning to up sticks and move to Los Angeles. The Beckhams' move has been such a closely-guarded secret that Victoria Beckham has only informed a handful of trusted friends in confidence, like everyone who made the Victoria Beckham Is Coming To America, Everyone TV show, all the people who interviewed Victoria Beckham about the TV show and every single person who'll either buy W magazine next month or won't be able to walk past it without noticing David and Victoria Beckham's gurning faces plastered all over the front of it like a couple of big attention spazzes.
But now the secret is out, because last night David and Victoria Beckham finally moved to Los Angeles to start their new American lives in a modest little $22 million home next door to Tom Cruise complete with the world's stupidest wardrobe, as Forbes reports:
Soccer great David Beckham and his wife, "Posh Spice" Victoria, arrived with their three children to begin their new life in Los Angeles, greeted by the familiar sight of reporters and photographers. Authorities set up barricades at Los Angeles International Airport as if the arrival of the soccer star and the Spice Girl was a red carpet premiere. The British power couple held hands as they walked out of a terminal shortly before 8:20 p.m… The media swarm also attracted curious onlookers, though not everyone knew what the big deal was. "Who's David Beckham?" asked Austin Baker, an 11-year-old waiting for a flight.
Oh, alright. The whole world knew that David and Victoria Beckham were headed for LA, ever since David Beckham signed with LA Galaxy back in January because Tom Cruise asked him to. Although it's widely thought that David and Victoria Beckham have moved to Los Angeles to flog some perfume and maximise their fame to such an extent that Victoria Beckham won't have to get chased around a school by some pigs to get headlines any more, the real reason is so that David Beckham can play for LA Galaxy.
It's an important career move for David Beckham, too. Later today he'll be officially unveiled by LA Galaxy, not just as a player but as an ambassador who'll help increase the popularity of football in America. "Play more football, kids," David Beckham will effectively be saying, "and then one day maybe you can turn your back on an international career to earn millions of dollars playing against bloated old hasbeens in front of tiny crowds, too." And Victoria Beckham will probably become an ambassador too, for marrying rich sportsmen so it doesn't matter when your solo pop career fails, or something.
