It's good to see that Pete Doherty has finally sorted out his drug problems and is fast becoming a model citiz… what's that? Pete Doherty has been in a giant fight with a photographer in Rome? Figures.
Reports are coming in that Pete Doherty, the nation's favourite dirty-looking indie rocker with a voice like an asthmatic sea lion, spent Monday night locked in a rowdy skirmish with a photographer in Rome that apparently left Pete Doherty covered in blood and the snapper reportedly in hospital. Now the photographer is all "I'm going to the police," and Pete Doherty is all "but I didn't even do nuffink, honest guv."
It's not particularly unusual for a celebrity to get annoyed at photographers; Bruce Willis is suing a snapper and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie try and live exclusively in countries where they can get the paparazzi arrested – or at the very least choked a little bit – more easily. But when Pete Doherty sees a photographer, you never know what's going to happen. Well, OK, you do mostly know – he'll either stand around looking slightly vague, start squirting blood around out of a syringe or he'll get all fighty. That last one's what Pete Doherty was supposed to have done on Monday night in Rome although, as BBC News reports, he's denying that started it:
An Italian newspaper claims [the fight] happened outside Doherty's hotel after he played at the Piper Club. The photographer involved reportedly went to hospital and the London Evening Standard said he was thinking of making a complaint about the incident. But a spokesman for the singer said he has witnesses who saw him clearly being hit on the head with a camera. "Reports that the photographer might make an official complaint will certainly interest Pete's lawyers," the spokesman said. Photos of the rock star covered in blood have appeared in British newspapers.
Pete Doherty is staying tight-lipped about the fight, which was apparently preceded by a Babyshambles gig that included the drummer getting hurt by a flying missile and Pete Doherty cutting his chest with a broken vodka bottle, insulting the audience and smashing up his instruments with a microphone stand. If this is how Pete Doherty celebrates getting Kate Moss pregnant you'd all be well advised to stay indoors in nine months' time.
