The dreadful realisation that Owen Wilson's weekend suicide attempt really happened is still slowly sinking in – but now details surrounding Owen Wilson's attempted suicide are starting to emerge, and it's not good for Alan Partridge.
As Owen Wilson takes the time he needs to recover from the suicide attempt by dropping out of forthcoming Ben Stiller movie Tropic Thunder, Owen Wilson's attorney has come forward to reveal that, although he tried to kill himself by slashing his wrists, reports that Owen Wilson also took a drug overdose were way off the mark. Meanwhile, dear old Courtney Love has decided to shoulder-barge her way into the Owen Wilson suicide attempt melee by blaming the whole thing squarely on Steve Coogan, suggesting that Coogan pumped Owen Wilson full of drugs and that's why he attempted suicide. The moral of this story is don't let Steve Coogan be your friend. Or don't get Courtney Love pregnant. Or don't try and kill yourself. Definitely one of those three.
It's been close to a week since Owen Wilson shocked the world by trying to kill himself out of the blue. As one of the world's most well-known actors, the co-writer of some of the finest bittersweet films of the last decade and one of the most bizarrely outspoken opponents of the Dalai Lama, Owen Wilson had a laidback, well-liked reputation that was entirely at odds with this weekend's reports that Owen's brother Luke Wilson had found him lying on his floor with a slashed wrist and an empty bottle of pills by his side.
Slowly but surely, however, details have slowly started to trickle out about Owen Wilson's suicide attempt. Although the extent of a confirmation from the man himself came when Owen Wilson asked to be left alone while he receives treatment for his problems, the Santa Monica Police Department log book has revealed that Owen Wilson did attempt suicide. And now Owen Wilson's attorney has decided to speak out on the exact nature of Owen's suicide attempt. MSNBC reports:
Police were called to Owen Wilson’s house after the actor slit his wrists. However, contrary to other reports, there was no drug overdose, an attorney for Wilson told “Access Hollywood.” The attorney also told “Access” that the actor did not have his stomach pumped. The attorney said Wilson had been taking antidepressants, but was not aware of any other drugs in his system at the time of the incident.
And somebody probably should have pointed that out to Courtney Love. Because Courtney Love is something of a suicide attempt expert for obvious reasons – plus a good friend of Owen Wilson – it didn't take long for her to weigh in on Owen Wilson's suicide attempt. Apparently it's all Steve Coogan's fault. MSNBC again:
“Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t comment but I care too much about Owen. I went through this with Steve. I was just out of rehab and he was right there with the drugs,” Love told Us Weekly. “I tried to warn Owen. I tried to warn his friends. I adore the Wilson brothers. I hope, from the bottom of my heart, that Owen stays the hell away from that guy and surrounds himself with good people who care about him for who he is and not what they can get from him.”
Now, before we rush to any conclusions about Steve Coogan – who co-starred with Wilson in Around The World In 80 Days and Night At The Museum – being the cause of Owen Wilson's suicide attempt, it's important to put Courtney Love's statement into context. For starters, it was reported that Steve Coogan got Courtney Love pregnant two years ago, although a baby never emerged and it was all very confusing – so maybe there's an ongoing grudge. Plus, don't forget that Courtney Love says a lot of things that aren't necessarily correct, like how she would replace Paula Abdul on American Idol or that online dating agencies suck because "two per cent of thier 'Cliermnts ar elike me and there was no-one for me," or how Mel Gibson is actually OK.
For what it's worth, Steve Coogan has already denied any involvement in Owen Wilson's suicide attempt – so now that weird tangent is nicely tied up we can all get back to being confused and shell-shocked about Owen Wilson trying to kill himself in the first place again.
