A momentous, world-shaping thing happened last night – we learnt that you can put a shark into a trance by holding it upside down.
Oh, and also there was something about an election. Or something. Apparently Barack Obama gets to be president of America now, and that’s something we’re putting down to the huge array of celebrities who endorsed him. True, Obama’s lack of top-level experience may be a concern, but Barbara Streisand says he’s OK, and she sang You Don’t Bring Me Flowers. Ergo he’s the best man for the job.
Just don’t tell that to Carrie Underwood. Carrie Underwood has got so sick of hearing celebrity political endorsements that she’s ranted about it to TV Guide. And rightly so – it’s wrong that celebrities get to abuse their position by publicly broadcasting their badly thought-out opinions in the mistaken belief that they’re more important than everyone else. So thank you Carrie Underwood for doing, um, that exact thing.
Well done, celebrities. Give yourselves a pat on the back. Barack Obama is going to be the next president of America, and he wouldn’t have got there without you.
Sure his inherent decency, cool-headed crisis management and clear ideological differences from the current president might have helped him a bit but, really, would Barack Obama have won the election if Diddy didn’t spin around in his garden babbling about crackheads? Of course he wouldn’t. And Pamela Anderson, for bravely screeching about Sarah Palin like an injured witch at some godawful awards show, you deserve a bloody medal or something.
It’s just a shame that Carrie Underwood doesn’t feel the same. Oh come on, you know – Carrie Underwood. She’s that vaguely redneck woman from American Idol who doesn’t eat meat. Not really a big fan of taking her clothes off. Never really done or said anything particularly interesting or worthwhile in her entire life. You know her. Or, more realistically, you don’t.
Either way, boy oh boy, is Carrie Underwood ever mad about all these celebrities banging on about their political beliefs all the time. Underwood told TV Guide:
“There is someone I do support, but I don’t support publicly. I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate… It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions. I would never want anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to.”
Carrie Underwood makes a very good point here – that you should never, ever do anything that Carrie Underwood tells you to. In fact, just to be safe, we should all probably start actively doing the precise opposite of whatever Carrie Underwood says, even if it means returning to a lit firework when she tells you not to.
That means that, when Carrie Underwood said we shouldn’t listen to celebrities who preach their worthless opinions to the public under the borderline offensive assumption that anyone cares, what she actually meant was that we should listen to them.
Phew, thank heavens for that. Because, honestly, we don’t know about you, but we wouldn’t be able to even wipe our own arse unless we heard what Matt Damon thinks about the political ramifications of various arse-wiping techniques first.

NINA – ENGLISH speak ENGLISH. with is spelled WITH not WIT. The is THE not THA…No ones is hating…its about experience and his background. We’re adults and clearly YOU ARE NOT! Anyone who talks like that is clearly a child. All these young adults that voted for the first time DID follow the celebrities and voted. You know HITLER gave good speeches too Just like Obama. He can talk the talk, lets see if this man WITH NO EXPERIENCE can run this country. Unbelievable that Americans just voted for a president that couldn’t prove his citizenship. I commend Carrie for saying what she did because SHE’S ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! Celebrities need to shut up about who they vote for and make sure the young people actually FOLLOW the elections and the issues. That way we wouldn’t have a non experienced man in the White House.
Debi F. says
I like Carrie Underwood, but in this case I think that she is in the wrong! She seems to think that apparently us Americans can’t seem to make our own decisions without hearing what maybe one of our favorite entertainers say first! They have a right to say what they believe, that doesn’t mean that we have to go along with their beliefs! It’s no different Carrie than you endorsing your latest C.D. to get people to buy it to help support you! You need to give this country more credit and know that we do have our own minds and we aren’t robots out here doing everything that “celebrities” tell us to do! Yes you have talent and being from the same state as you it’s a shame that fame has already gotten the best of you it seems! I’m still a fan and I really do like you, I just think you may need a reality check! Fame can be taken away from a person just as easily as it was given to them! Don’t ever forget that the reason you are where you are has alot to do with your fans! It kinda sounded to me like you don’t have much confidence or faith in the way your fans can make their OWN decisions! That’s really a shame!!! Take Care! May God Bless You!

I think Carrie has it right, although I’m not sure she explained it right. She understands the First Amendment and she exercised it without endorsing any one candidate. She understands celebrities are like Jedi Knights: They have influence over the weak-minded. People will take the word of a celebrity as fact without bothering to think for themselves. As fans people will try to emulate their favorite celebrity without thinking about what they are really doing. Celebrity advertising does work, but Carrie would rather have people think for themselves when it comes to the election; not just to vote because of a celebrity endorsement. Don’t we all want our politicians elected because the people REALLY believed they were the best choice for our country? I would be more frightened if a large percentage of voters were simply voting “Like Mike”.

That was the most ignorant and biased article ever. You suck buddy, try another field. Besides I agree with her completely, one of the reasons so many people are so lost and f*cked up in this country is because they grow up and live through Hollywood and mtv obsessing with a lifestyle they know nothing about and never will. Actors and Performers are no differemt than anyone else and their opinion in politics is no more important either. Carrie is awesome and actually has her head on right unlike most of Hollywood.

Many african-americans don’t like what his preacher said. Martin Luther King would not have liked what his preacher said. So seriously lets not base it on that, especially considering his mother is what?? White!!. If you were an african-american you would understand why his wife stated that she was proud of this country for the first time. This would never have happened years ago even if Obama did have”experience”. That is why she is proud. So go ahead jump off the hate train. As for those of you who say you’re mature be realistic.

First off, I am a young adult and although it was interesting to see who some of my fave celebs were voting for, it DID NOT alter my choice for President.
Secondly, “Hitler gave good speeches just like Obama..” – So you’re saying McCain didn’t deliver good speeches?? What makes it ethical for you to compare Obama to Hitler but not do the same for McCain? Oh, that’s right, because you’re a Republican. And, if by not comparing McCain’s speech-giving abilities to Hitler, you are therefore saying McCain doesn’t talk a good talk so WHY IN THE HELL would there be any McCain supporters if the man can’t deliver a good speech? Are Republicans just drones that will follow anyone that is also Republican without question?
And last but not least, “Unbelievable that Americans just voted for a president that couldn’t prove his citizenship.” Maybe you should check your facts before you start foaming at the mouth, childrenvoters…President-Elect Obama was born Aug. 4, 1961 in Hawaii, which was acquired by the United States on August 21, 1959. The following link is from the Los Angeles Times regarding that rumor.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/06/obama-birth.html
The article also mentions that your Republican, John McCain was not born in the States either but rather in a military hospital in Panama but of course, you wouldn’t want to bring that up.

I have to agree with Tones and Childrenvoters. Posting rude and negative information on the internet is pretty ridiculous. And Carrie has the right to say whatever she likes… Freedom of speech. I also have to agree with them about electing a president that has no experience in office, does not like this country, and will not even solute our flag which represents our nation. How do you think our troops feel fighting under a man who’s kind their fighting against. Celebreties influence young people tremendisouly and i believe that who we vote for should be personal and not revealed to the entire world. That way we can base our vote on what we believe and not what we see and hear by celeberties.

I agree with carrie. Its friggin sad that everyone, even the media did NOT give mcain/palin a chance. That’s RACIST. Its pretty sad when even the media is being bought off by the most inexperienced man to get into office. I have nothing against Obama, but the bs and over exposure that they gave him made nothing but a bitter taste in my mouth for him. I feel like the USA just got itself shoved worse down the drain. People seem to forget how racist Obama’s pastor is towards white people, and how millitant his wife is. God help us.
(and for the record I didnt like what mcain said either so dont u dare tell me i’m racist.)
Carrie'sRight says
Carrie is 100% correct on this. Far too many gullible morons hang on the words of celebrities. You are going to base your opinions on the fact you listen to their music or like their movies? Just plain dumb. Make up your own mind, you might even learn something along the way. That seems to be a little too tough for most of the USA these days though. Spoon fed by the media and celebrities is not how I want to end up. You may like it though…
izzie says
If Mccain had won, and Oprah and other celebs had endorsed him, would you be calling those first time voters weak-minded?? Would you be saying that the celebs are “jedi knights”?? I voted for Obama not because he was african-american, and not because Oprah or Diddy, etc… did so, but because I believe. America needs change and if that change is an “inexperienced” man as you call him. Then so be it.
Steve says
I am admittedly a Republican and very proud of it. However, I completely agree with Ms. Underwood about celebrity endorsements… Believe me, Ted Nugent for the right is no better than the liteny of left-wing communist actors and entertainer that have never actually worked hard to earn anything they own. The electorate has spoken and, for better or worse, a very unqualified individual is now our President-elect. So, let’s rally behind Obama – regardless of our party afiliations- and give him a chance. We may just end up being pleasantly surprised!

Based on celebrity reputations I don’t put much stock in what they say, think and do. Very few would be positive role models for anyone to follow. I think everybody that is upset with the fact that OBAMA was elected should just accept it…..he has already been elected and he most definitely cannot be any worse than our current president(i.e our economy). I want to leave you all with one thought….people said that Barack OBAMA was not experienced enough to be president but if I recall correctly neither was/is John McCain he was never president and therefore he can only think about what he would like to do….point blank he has no experience in the presidential position. OBAMA said yes we can and yes we did!!!!!!! People should stop being so bitter about the outcome of the election and realize how huge this is going to be for not only our race relations with other countries but here is AMERICA….where now it is truly evident that anything can be achieved in this great country of ours!!!!!!!God Bless America!!!!!

The author of this article just wanted an excuse to bash Carrie Underwood b/c of her opinion which most likely differs from his. However someone suggested that all the young voters based their opinions off the celebs endorsements, and as a first time voter for the Presidency and a young woman I can honestly say that is not true-I did my own research to find which candidate was the best for me, it just so happens my candidate did not win. But good for Carrie Underwood speaking her mind and going against the grain!

And your opinion is as dirty as your own arse.
Erin says
The bad thing about all this is that as much as these celebrities babbled on and on about who they did or didn’t support, the sad truth is that most of them probably didn’t even take time out of there busy schedule to actually vote. So in my opinion, there opinions are worthless. And yes, America can think for itself, but with all the uninformed children beginning to vote, (you know, the ones who don’t bother to do the research or even watch the news about political campaigns or who stands for what) why would this country even want them to try and think for themselves? This simply put, it should be illegal for celebrities to voice there opinions about things of significance throughout the media because these uninformed children are going to listen to there “idols”.
jim says
It is ashame that the majority of votes from blacks were because he was black and not because they knew anything about the man. It is ashame when the media can be biased to persuade and group of ignorant people to vote the way they want them to. It is ashame that the people of the US think that one man can cause the destruction of our economy. Try to finish school it might help.
Judy says
Stuart, would you have trashed Ms. Underwood if she had announced to the world who she is supporting?? I somehow doubt it. Especially with your snide comments about her “She’s that vaguely redneck woman from American Idol who doesn’t eat meat. Not really a big fan of taking her clothes off. Never really done or said anything particularly interesting or worthwhile in her entire life.” Just for the record -she has multiple Grammy Awards and her first album went seven times platinum and stands as the fastest selling debut country album in Nielsen SoundScan history. But thats not all. She also graduated magna cum laude in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication and an emphasis in journalism from Northeastern State University. Is that the real problem? Are just scared of a woman with both Brains and Talent?? And as one additional piece of information about Ms. Underwood, she has performed with the USO for our soldiers overseas, something none of the other celebrities you have mentioned have bothered to do. So what makes them so special, again?
Let’s be realistic. People taken in the majority are stupid sheep who will follow where they are pointed to. That’s why celebrities endorse everything from shampoo to shoes. You think that the voting process is any different? Shame on you for being just as ignorant as the rest of the sheep.
Olga says
Ok, so Carrie sounds like she is republican – good and she is right on the money, way too many people can’t think for themselves and would just rather listen to Oprah than to do their own research and make informed choice.
The article is dripping with sarcasm – obviously written by a democrat and someone who will never make it big in journalism with this attitute. You want to write? Learn to just write well, not have this sarcasm dripping from every word……… shame on you…….
I am a McCain supporter, but Obama won, which means he is my president and I will pray for him and will respect him the same way I would have if it was McCain. A lot of democrats need to learn the same…..

America didn’t elect a democrat for President, they elected a socialist who cares more about every other country in the world than America. What has this world come to when African Americans are claiming that Obama is the first black president whenever he might be 10% black. Apparently God is ready to chastise America.

Olga, I have yet to see a blog where Democrats were using their entire comment time to bash on McCain or Republicans. And if there were, it was only to reply to a comment made by a McCain supporter who had nothing but nasty, and disrespectful comments about President-Elect Obama and his supporters and/or Democrats in general. All I see are comments from Republicans saying: “the nation’s going down now that Obama’s in office”, “democrats are idiots”, and so on and so forth. I believe you Republicans need to learn humility and respect for opinions of others. Treat others as you would like to be treated. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Don’t expect all Democrats to sit idly by and watch Republicans bashing and bad-mouthing us all day, every day and not have a thing or two to say back. Patience is a virtue, but we’re not saints.

John Kerry had a lot of celebrity endorsements too. So, how come he didnt win the popular vote by over 7 million votes like Obama did? You know since without the celebrity endorsements Obama wouldnt have won at all like this article claims. Im sure it didnt have anything to do with the 22% approval rating of our current republican president and the fact that John Mccain voted with him 90% of the time. I said from the beginning that whoever won the democratic nomination would be the next president.
Carrie Underwood is just mad because her pick didnt win and now she will be paying higher taxes on her millions of dollars. Plus shes probably racist like every other country music singer.

I personally believe that Carrie has a right to voice her opinion; all of us are entitled to one. I must say that although, many have expressed their disapproval of his historic win last night, but it happened. We have to deal with it and move on. The better man won last night. Yes he is inexperienced, but so was McCain and Palin. Would it be justified just to vote for a candidate because he was black, white or a man or woman? America has spoken and they chose change. I think that we are too hard on the young voters as well. Just because they see issues differently than the older generation does not mean that they were being puppets to the stars. They are the future of our country, and just because they did not take on racists attitudes of their ancestors they should not be criticized for who they voted for. I voted for Obama and I am African American, not just because of his color, but because I like what he had to say. Look where experience has gotten us thus far. Our economy sucks, we are in a recession, and the rich keep getting richer and the poor middle class people are suffering while jobs are constantly shipped overseas. We are all concerned about jobs, healthcare, benefits and the future of our country. This country has been divided for too long and it is time that we unite to get our country where it needs to be. This was going to happen sooner or later, and I am a firm believer that nothing happens before its time, and last night was the time. If people do not like the change, then move to another country.
Jen says
People like you are exactly what is wrong with this country!
As mentioned earlier if she had been another dumb celebrity who blabbed about how she supported Obama (or wrote some stupid fucking song about him too… Thanks Usher & co… NOW I know who I can vote for!!!!) You probably wouldn’t even be bashing her right now! Real journalist are supposed to report their stories without bias something you will obviously never master because you are just a blogger
For the guy who said “It’s no different Carrie than you endorsing your latest C.D. to get people to buy it to help support you!” Hello yes it is…Telling me about their cd isn’t just an opinion, it is their lifeblood! But Telling me that they like something/one is not and will not make me run out to buy their cd (i.e. they wont get any money) ..But telling me their cd is coming out and letting me hear it WILL MAKE THEM MORE MONEY Most Hollywood celebrities are celebrities anyway because we liked the things that they do…Not because we care about what you think about an election, color, and shampoo etc… so please Celebrities shut up !! if you like someone vote for them ( no need to tell me I will vote how i want to) ..Then go back to making music and/or acting.
In case you were wondering, and I know you are… Yes I did vote McCain and although I am sad he lost I also respect our voting system and the people who made their voices heard and am looking forward to seeing how he will earn my support because unlike some of the people (the sheep know who they are) who voted without doing their research I did and am looking forward to not only the election finally being over but also to what the next four or more years may hold for America ….
Sorry for you says
All you liberals should be proud of yourselves. You got a muslim non-citizen into office. Now when all your money is taken from YOU and given to all those welfare recipients who couldn’t WAIT for him to be in office so their free meal ticket would continue, you can thank your precious OBAMA for that. He will run this country into the ground.
He is just a change not THE change and Nita if you think anyone is going to take one word you have said serious with that illiterate language and nonsense you were spouting,.. please. Honey, it’s people like you that make it clear how Obama got elected in the first place. Ignorance.

We have to keep in mind that with the rights we have in this country we should also exercise those rights with responsibility, respect and common sense. Two of my uncles gave the ultimate sacrifice for our great country – and that included protecting our right to free speech. No, I do not agree with the politics of the majority of celebrities/entertainers, but I don’t want them to lose their right to express their opinion.
The problem is that too many people seem to vote based on emotion and whatever ‘the crowd’ thinks is best. They do not want to acknowledge opposite points of view. This is why people get so angry and let us know how smart they really are when they vent their opinions (some intelligent, some not so much).
I’m not angry even though my candidate did not win the election. I liked Obama’s acceptance speech (for the most part) and hope he will work fairly on the issues I care about including, but not limited to, taxes, incentives for small businesses & self-employed people, illegal immigration, our nation’s security, the real reason health insurance is unattainable for so many, and the real-estate and financial markets.
Folks, let’s do the research on these issues and have some good productive discussions instead of the name-calling.
If we all do our homework, then we’ll always know that our well-thought-out votes mean that the best candidate really does win:)
I am still very proud to be an American!

With that, I have come to the conclusion that Carrie Underwood may be a lot less stupid next year. I have high hopes for her! Go Carrie! Reach for intellect; you can do anything you set your mind to!
You are something great! (Positivity will not allow me to go into any greater detail than that.)

hey – america – LULZ!
at least you voted your guy in. fatman brown just sort of sneaked in and put his name on the door.
you should be happy that you now have a president who can string a whole sentence together. shit, thats such an improvement i expect to see your GDP go up instantly.
im surprised though, that you non-obamas cant see this as a good thing. america has been so far up its own arse for god knows how long that you basically fucked the world economy with your personal crusades and high maintenance lives. good show. perhaps a little socialist leaning may help you out of this crises.
actually, im not surprised at all.
P.S. please tear up your constitution. its screwing you all up. :(

The people who keep spewing out crap about Obama not being a citizen and Obama not saying the pledge of allegience REALLY NEED TO GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT! I’ve seen youtube videos of him holding his hand to his heart and LEAD the pledge of allegience. I’ve posted up a link which proves his citizenship. I’m aware this country is about freedom of speech but when you’re excercising that right, please do so with some honesty and integrity! Have a little more self-respect in yourself than to just come out and say what you want to say just to SAY IT. Because without researching and getting the facts, you just come off as an idiot. Obama may not be “experienced” but who the F*** is? Was Bush a president BEFORE he got elected two terms in a row? Has McCain been a president somewhere else before and that’s what makes him experienced? Did Clinton hold the President title before he was President? Which President since the beginning of the American Presidency have ANY PRESIDENCY EXPERIENCE before being elected into office?? I’m proud to be an American but after seeing so many hateful and STUPID comments about his so called “lack of experience”, it makes me sick to my stomach that I share a country with you idiots. YES, I’m calling you idiots. Republicans have been name-calling (just like their nominee) since the beginning of the campaign so I’m not going to hold my tongue anymore either. Like I said before: Patience is a virtue, but I’m not a saint.

I fully agree with Carrie. annnnnd furthermore I think the author of this article is an idiot. It obviously goes NOWHERE. Um, shes an American idol who has done WAY more than you give her credit for. Excuse her for actually being a “good girl” who doesnt have to take her cothes off to get fans. She huge right now..and will be for years to come..so get used to it buddy.

There are so many parallels between Islam and Christianity that it’s hard to believe any true Muslim or Christian would feel anything but good will for each other. Which means, essentially, that most of you are fakes.
I’m neither, so I don’t have much to worry about.
Bobbi says
You think all country singers are racist and by stereotyping country singers you are just as bad as a racist. Good job lowering yourself to that level.
And I agree with Carrie – I can make my own decisions without people like Oprah cramming her opinion down my throat.

Carrie ended up being right. Obama has been a disaster which has shown the hollywood “intelligentsia” are the usual left wing sheeple.
