When Britney Spears gives an interview, you really take your chances. If Britney manages to slip her publicist's grasp, it's all loose eyelashes, bad jewellery and tear-stained shrieking about how hard it is to get your picture taken sometimes.
But, if Britney Spears has her entourage in tow – which was the case when she was recently interviewed for Harper's Bazaar magazine – then Britney will give a flawless display of saying that everything's fine, even if she doesn't feel too pretty with a baby growing inside her. But, hey, who are we to argue with Britney Spears? Maybe everything is fine.
Oh no, wait – Britney says that she also wants to do a duet with Kevin Federline. We knew things were too good to be true.
Usually, you'd think that a heavily pregnant woman would want to rest up for the gruelling final months of her pregnancy, especially when she also has a young son to look after at the same time. But Britney Spears isn't most heavily pregnant women, and she's got a lot of making up to do.
Because last month, Britney Spears gave a television interview with Matt Lauer. Ostensibly it was a 'this is the real me, y'all' interview where Britney would bare all on her 'troubled' marriage and the problems with baby Sean Preston, but instead it turned into a gruesome snot-drizzled sobbing contest which somehow managed to hurt Britney Spears' reputation even more. Add this to all the mental poems and the not being sexy anymore and you can see the staggering amount of work that Britney Spears has to do to get herself liked again.
The first wave of attack for Britney Spears was to dye her hair black and drop her clothes for Harper's Bazaar magazine, and the second wave was to have a reasoned, measured, resolutely non-weepy interview with the magazine for its August issue too, where she says everything that her fans want to hear. For an example, here's what Britney says about performing again:
"I can't wait to do that again. But I really have to take my time and do it right and be safe. Actually… not that safe. When you perform, you have to be dangerous."
Yeah, that's right, dangerous performing! We wanna see Britney do something really dangerous, like perform I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman live on a stage made of electrified razorwire while being repeatedly kicked about the jaw by an angry horse, or something dangerous like that. So that's the fans excited – now, how can Britney Spears make young pregnant women identify with her again? By admitting her insecurities about her body, obviously:
"This one, I was like, I just gotta wing it. It was weird for me at first because of who I am; wherever you go they expect you to look a certain way. I'm not supposed to be this huge pregnant superstar."
This is fantastic! Britney's really got everyone back onside now! Let's just pray that she doesn't say something that buggers up all her good work:
"I'm so proud of Kevin. He's been working so hard on his own album since I got pregnant with Preston."
Whoops.
