Every single person on the entire planet knows that Phillip Seymour Hoffman is going to play The Penguin in Batman 3.
True, there isn’t a script for Batman 3 yet, Christopher Nolan hasn’t even admitted that he wants to make a Batman 3 three yet and for all we know the movie’s going to be about Crazy Quilt or Mr Polka Dot instead of The Penguin. But, that said, Phillip Seymour Hoffman is definitely going to play The Penguin in Batman 3.
Except Phillip Seymour Hoffman doesn’t really think that’s going to happen. In a recent interview Hoffman claimed that he doesn’t think he’d be a good Penguin and that someone else should probably do it instead. Which, we think, is a coded message to say that he thinks he’d be a brilliant Penguin in Batman 3 and that he definitely wants to do it. Tell your friends. It’s official!
Even though The Dark Knight is second only to Titanic in terms of box office grosses, you wouldn’t want to be invited to play a Batman villain in its sequel, would you. Just look what the horrific curse of Batman has done to the acting community already.
Heath Ledger, obviously, played The Joker in The Dark Knight and wound up dead, but that’s not all. Cesar Romero played The Joker in the 1960s Batman TV series and he died just 24 years afterwards at the tragically young age of 86. Worse still, Jack Nicholson played The Joker in the 1989 Tim Burton Batman movie and he’s ended up being quite old.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman knows this only too well, and the last thing he wants to do is be dead or old one day, which is why he’s doing his best to distance himself from rumours linking him to the role of The Penguin in Batman 3.
Ever since The Dark Knight was released, there have been three main rumours about Batman 3 – 1) Johnny Depp would be the Riddler, 2) Cher would be Catwoman and 3) Phillip Seymour Hoffman would be The Penguin.
Given that nobody – not even, it seems, Christopher Nolan – knows what’s going to even happen in Batman 3 yet, these rumours have seemed unlikely at best or, in Cher’s case, freakish and somewhat libido-dulling. And, just to make that perfectly clear, Phillip Seymour Hoffman has finally weighed in on the possibility of playing The Penguin, as Digital Spy reports:
“To be quite honest, I don’t know whether I would be a good Penguin. I think I’m more interested in seeing someone else do it.”
Now, Hollywood is a funny place, so we’re taking Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s statement as meaning one of three things:
1 – Phillip Seymour Hoffman knows that he’s a favourite for The Penguin in Batman 3 and he’s distancing himself deliberately so that producers ramp up their fee to lure him in.
2 – Phillip Seymour Hoffman genuinely doesn’t want to be The Penguin because he’d much rather make thematically-impenetrable Charlie Kaufman movies for the rest of his life.
3 – Phillip Seymour Hoffman is definitely definitely going to play The Penguin in Batman 3. Definitely.
Oh, who are we kidding? It’s the last one, isn’t it.

maybe he likes the idea but doesnt want to tempt any curse of a batman 3 on himself

penguin would not be a great villain, all he is a corrupt bussiness man. no matter how great of an actor you are there is no where you can make penguin as good as a villain to be in 3rd film, danny de vito stretched the character as far as you can. penguin doesn’t have great past or even menance about him to be a good villain. even nolan said he wouldn’t penguin in his film.

Crazy Quilt. Stuart, seriously…. and I’m only asking because I care (to get some for myself)…
How many drugs are you on when you write? I mean, at any given moment.
To IGY:
The Penguin would be a FANTASTIC villain in the modern age! A corrupt businessman?? Really? That’s not especially bad anymore; that’s taught in school, I suspect.
I’d expect audience participation on the order of perhaps The Rocky Horror Picture Show when everyone in the audience is able to see their own employer in him.
The Dread Pirate Sausage! says
Now you’ll excuse me while I continue to laugh out of control at ‘Crazy Quilt’. I don’t know why. It’s just hysterically funny to me just now.
Horror says
Nobody else up for seeing Arnie reprise his role as Freeze? They could use the rest of the puns that they couldn’t fit in Batman and Robin.
machernucha says
if there is a penguin, toby jones should play him

i can see where you’re coming from but, there aren’t a lot of great sources (comics) to choose how to put penguin into a great realistic storyline. if you watch batman begins and dark knight and then read batman long halloween, batman year one and the killing joke who realise how much Nolan and co. took from the comics.
iqy says
oh i forgot remeber ,the penguin is meant to challenge the batman, do you actually see him phycologically or physically beating the batman the way that rha’s and joker did.
TFA says
Penguin? Really? I could not think of a less intimidating villain then the Penguin. Whats his story going to be? “Oh no! You humans and your man made global warming! I want revenge *quack*” Nolan has done a fine job of modernizing and destupidizing the Batman franchise. We dont need a story thatll turn into a saturday morning cartoon.

Quite brilliant. Worthy of applause.

hmm…. well it seams to me that their isn’t a solid story for batman 3. unless of course someone could think of one. The problem is that everyone loved the Joker. He’s gone and there’s a mixed expectation amung fans. On one side, people don’t want a new joker to replace leadger. One the other hand, people want the joker since he is batmans arch enemy. I personally think that a ton of more batman movies could be made…. A third problem is Bale doesn’t want a robin in the story… and i don’t blame him. I don’t like Robin, but i have an idea for a thrid movie. See the third movie needs to introduce a new hero since batman has fallen in public opionion. I don’t think Robin quite fits, but i kind of think Nitghtwing sould play a big part. Nightwing starts were batman left off, but nightwing doesn’t know that batman is a good guy. I also think we need to introduce two villians, and not the Riddler and Catwoman. Riddler is awsome, but it was what the fans expect. The main movies been centralized about mobs so how about Black Mask and Bane. You could even through in the Penquin as an arms dealer or a evil politition that takes over the mayor positon of the town, and have him be working for black mask. Have Nightwings family killed and He goes on a killing path much like two Face, only the outcome ends different. Meanwhile Batman is torn, not wanting what happened to Havry be a Repeat of Nightwing. I don’t want to give away all of my ideas and my villians aren’t set in stone but someone leave a comment. Tell me if you think this would be a good story for batman three.

What about harley quinn? when will they bring her into the movie?

Hoffman wants to play the Penguin. He knows it. He can feel it. Hell, I have the storyline here for you:
With the mafia on the verge of self-destruction for a new leader, Batman feels that he can now hang up his costume, now able to keep peace to himself, no longer hunted by the police (though they are still on the lookout). With the arrival of The Penguin as the new mafia leader (and Nolan can use some Godfather references) Bruce Wayne, who has since given up and is sickened with the Batman persona, must bring it back once more to fight The Penguin, and his guard, BANE.

Good God ppl! I have been writing a plot 4 a Bat3! Not 2 give 2 much away…..here goes!
Bat tells Gordon 2 out out a warrant 4 Batman cause the ppl of Gotham need 2 believe in a future of criminal justice and not in a man in a costume! He promises 2 never show himself again so there is no worry of being arrested! Batman is gone 4 good!!
The city of Gotham is now overcome by gangs and mafia crime! The police r even losing the battle on the streets! Crime is @ the highest peak and the ppl of Gotham r terrified!!!
What 2 do???
How can this b stopped??
Without going further and giving up everything! u can bring in 2 villains and catwoman! 1 known villain,The Penquin and a new villain, the Black Mask! AsMuch as I want 2 explain things (cause it really is a great plot) I can’t! Needless 2 say, this plot would create atleast 2 more movies and possibly a 3rd! Making a total of 5 movies!!!

I agree with penguin being a great villian. What better way to start off the movie th
With penguin making somesort of profits off the damage from the last movie
Or something like that. Thatwould be interesting to see how that turns out.
And I read about cher. Cher! Seriously there are too many good actresses to play
Out there to pick her. How about halle berry? I know catwoman was horrible but
With the right directing she could be very evil and sexy part. And bring back
Scarecrow. His charactor had too much potenial to be left behind in a
Parking garage. What better way to honor heath then to have scarecrow trick
Batman into fearing the joker and having nightmares about him? Just giving
My two cents. Let me know what you guys think.
