You’ve probably spent the last week fretting about the Michael Jackson death coverage becoming less oppressively ubiquitous.
But relax! Michael Jackson is still the only thing that anybody wants to see, hear, read or think about – the stories just needed a new angle to keep things fresh. So here’s the good news – Michael Jackson’s death is now being treated as a criminal investigation, with Michael’s cardiologist being investigated on suspicion of manslaughter!
Hooray! Hopefully this investigation will fill the journalistic gap between now and the moment when Michael Jackson’s kids hit puberty and go completely off the titting rails! Exciting!
What with all the custody squabbles and alleged drug use and overbearingly gaudy memorial concert, it’s fair to say that Michael Jackson’s death has been a fairly good one as these things go. Good, but not great. The sad truth of the matter is that Michael Jackson’s death is still lagging a little way behind Anna Nicole Smith‘s death in terms of spectacle.
Because, really, that had it all. Drugs, a custody battle that actually involved an edge-of-your-seat paternity test, a terrifying video of Anna Nicole Smith dressed up as the sort of clown that hides in your cupboard at night and tries to stab you to death in your sleep, a criminal investigation. If Michael Jackson’s death wants to be a credible challenger to all of this, it needs to jolly well pull its socks up.
And the good news is, it has. The cardiologist who attempted to revive Michael Jackson on the day of his death is being investigated for manslaughter, as the Los Angeles Times reports:
Michael Jackson’s personal physician was identified as a suspect in the Los Angeles Police Department’s manslaughter investigation into the pop star’s death, according to court records filed Thursday in Houston. A pair of search warrants filed in Harris County District Court stated that investigators were looking for “items constituting evidence of the offense of manslaughter that tend to show that Dr. Conrad Murray committed the said criminal offense.”
It’s important to remember that nobody has been charged with anything yet, and that there’s still a very strong chance that Michael Jackson’s death will be found to be accidental. However, if officials can prove that anyone had managed to obtain drugs for Michael Jackson under an assumed name, then some charges may be brought. Ultimately much of this investigation rests on Michael Jackson’s official toxicology results, which are expected in the next week or so.
But still, that ticks drugs, children of questionable parentage and a criminal investigation off the Michael Jackson death to-do list. So now all we need is a video of Michael Jackson caked in horrifying make-up and he’ll have drawn level with Anna Nicole Smith.
What’s that? Every single video of Michael Jackson recorded over the course of the last decade? Oh, good point. Congratulations, Michael.

Can’t people just die in peace? I thought MJ was very talented when he was alive, but this is becoming just as pathetic as the Anna Nicole coverage.

There will never be another one like him. But in the grand spectacle that this has become you failed to mention Omer Bhatti, prodigal son.
Michael’s poor kids. Hopefully Katherine has canceled her cable TV and unplugged the internet.
I’ve shared a thought or two of my own on Michael at http://lauratrojan.com.
May he find peace. Soon.
