The MTV VMAs are an important landmark in the MTV calender, being the only day of the year when MTV remembers that its first initial stands for 'music' and not 'massively dull eight-hour re-run marathons of My Super Sweet 16'.
Yesterday the nominations for this year's MTV Video Music Awards were announced. And, by and large, the MTV VMA nominations went flawlessly – provided that you like Justin Timberlake and Beyonce a lot, then Kanye West and Rihanna a little bit less, then Amy Winehouse a little bit less than that, and then Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas hardly at all as that's more or less the order of artists in number of nominations. Still, whatever you think of the MTV VMA nominations, at least everyone can gather together and feel secure in the knowledge that we all like Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas hardly at all.
When MTV does an awards show, it gives the people what they want. Screw Helen Mirren winning an Oscar for dressing up as an old lady – MTV knows that the really good films involve at least one scene of ambiguously gay pirates running in a funny way. And when MTV does its annual Video Music Awards it also knows what the people want – Justin Timberlake for the girls, Beyonce for the boys and Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas for the confusing weirdos.
The MTV Video Music Award nominations were announced yesterday, and E! Online's got all the hot gossip. Well, not really 'hot'. And it can't actually be considered as 'gossip' as such, either. Still, here's what E! Online had to say:
Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé Knowles scored a leading seven nominations apiece for the Sin City-bound 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, including dueling Best Video nods for "What Goes Around…" and "Irreplaceable," respectively. The nominations were revealed during a special broadcast of Total Request Live Tuesday. For the first time ever, the ceremony will broadcast live from Las Vegas' Palms Casino Resort, and if nothing else, it promises to be a busy night for Timberlake. Not only is he scheduled to perform at the event, but he's teaming up with go-to producer and "SexyBack" collaborator Timbaland to host one of several Fantasy Suite parties at the hotel.
For what it's worth, Justin Timberlake's MTV nominations were spread out across his singles SexyBack (Most Earthshattering Collaboration), My Love (Best Choreography) and What Goes Around (Best Editing, Best Director, Best Video) along with nods for Best Male and Quadruple Threat, while the bulk of Beyonce's MTV VMA nominations came from her Beautiful Liar duet with Shakira (Most Earthshattering Collaboration, Best Choreography, Best Director, Best Editing) which isn't bad for a film of two slightly bored-looking women wriggling around like they've got worms, is it?
But even though on September 9 we'll all realise that, yet again, nothing exciting happens at the MTV VMAs, the VMA nominations stand as a time when the list of performers and nominees promise almost untold excitement. For example, now we know that Beyonce and Justin Timberlake scored more MTV VMA nominations than anyone else, anything short of an evening full of Nando's chicken and syrup and epileptic seizures and bone-crunching face-first falls down flights of stairs will be a vast disappointment.
And we don't even want to think about how bad we'll feel if Fergie wins anything.
