The MTV Video Music Awards used to be exciting and dangerous and fun. In contrast, this year's highlight was a slightly lame gatecrasher. No wonder people prefer to watch videos of exploding Coke bottles on YouTube instead.
During the usual glitzy dullness of the MTV VMA awards, a man named Six ran onto the stage and babbled something about MTV before trying to frighten Jennifer Lopez. And this was the only exciting thing to happen during the entire MTV VMA awards – James Blunt won a couple of MTV awards, for Christ's sake. James Blunt!
Last year's MTV Video Music Awards were an all-out extravaganza of hurricanes, shootings, Green Day winning everything and, um, Diddy, so how could this year's MTV VMAs – held last night in New York – possibly top that? Mainly, it seems, by getting OK Go to do the treadmill dance you've already seen a thousand times, making ex-jailbird Lil' Kim dress up as – get this – a prisoner, getting Jack Black to wiggle his eyebrows a bit and not letting the Red Hot Chili Peppers win as much as they probably thought they would. It's hardly Madonna getting off with Britney, is it?
Ahead of the MTV VMA awards, Shakira and the Red Hot Chili Peppers looked runaway favourites to scoop just about every award going, but neither act did as well as excepted; a combined total of 14 MTV VMA nominations only yielded one actual award each, for choreography and art direction. It's thought that the reason neither Shakira or the Red Hot Chili Peppers did very well at the MTV VMAs is because one is a grizzly old band with only one song and the other has a singing voice a bit like Janet Street Porter, but who can say for sure?
And that's about all the exciting things that happened at the MTV VMAs last night. Oh, except for the gatecrasher who messed up Panic! At The Disco's acceptance speech. ABC reports:
A man in the audience grabbed the microphone from one of the band members and introduced himself as 'Six.' "MTV never gave me my own show," he complained, making an unsuccessful bid to grasp the statuette from the hands of presenter Jennifer Lopez. The cameras pulled away and the intruder was swiftly dealt with, and a flustered Lopez quipped "That was all planned."
And here are the winners of the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, just because we know you won't be able to live without them:
