Aerosmith have been pretty quiet lately – save for an extended cameo in John Travolta movie Be Cool that made us want to punch ourselves unconscious just to make it stop – and now we know why.
Aerosmith had not been on the down-low for any of the reasons we had expected – like all of their songs they've made in the last decade being so useless that they decided to pack it in, or a sudden Prince Charles-like realisation that The Rolling Stones are never going to abdicate and let Aerosmith have a go at being The Band That Sounds The Most Like The Rolling Stones – the Aerosmith silence was because Steven Tyler has been fighting Hepatitis C on the hush-hush. However, this Hepatitis C struggle hasn't stopped Steven Tyler from wanting to continue being a rockstar, and he's written a new song to the tune of old Aerosmith song Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees) entitled Sharing Blood-Covered Needles (Is Hard On The Liver) to prove it.
There's been a lot of speculation on the wherabouts of Steven Tyler, the lead singer of Aerosmith. Or at least there would have been, had any of us had the slightest interest in crotchety old singers with culturally irrelevant 33-year-old bands, albeit singers whose iconic good looks make them look as if their face was stung repeatedly by giant bees with stingers like pneumatic road drills. And now the reason has become clearer; Steven Tyler has been secretly fighting blood disease Hepatitis C for the last three years.
Steven Tyler having Hepatitis C makes a lot of sense because most of the things Steven Tyler has done over the last year or so haven't. For instance, it would appear that the 'throat surgery' that Steven Tyler cancelled a tour for in March could have been down to Tyler's Hepatitis recovery. Also, Steven Tyler seems to be pinning his divorce on Hepatitis, too, although he seems to be unable to blame his honestly awful appearance in Be Cool on the illness, sadly. Here's what Steven Tyler told Access Hollywood:
“I’ve been pretty quiet about this. The band took a break about three years ago and I’ve had hepatitis C for a long time, asymptomatic. And I talked to my doctor… and he said now is the time and it’s 11 months of chemotherapy. So I went on that and it about killed me… I had a little problem at home, to say the least, and I would run upstairs at night, you know, to put the kids asleep and wake up at 3 in the morning with a nosebleed you know, just passed out from the interferon, the treatment. It’s a shot and pills and all of that. But the good news is I stood the test of time.”
Hepatitis C is a disease spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected individual – usually by injection drug use, unprotected sex or faulty blood transfusions – and can lead to liver cirrhosis or cancer. Hopefully Steven Tyler has treated the Hepatitis C before it reached this level of seriousness, but at least now Steven Tyler has got something to talk to Pamela Anderson about next time they're awkwardly sat next to each other at a polite dinner party.
