If you like zany sitcoms where someone usually dies in tragic circumstances at the end of each episode, Scrubs is the show for you.
And if you like Scrubs, we have some good news and bad news for you. The good news is that Scrubs has found a new life on ABC, which is committed to broadcasting the show long-term. The bad news is that you’re an idiot for liking Scrubs.
Oh, and the other bad news is that Zach Braff, the star of Scrubs, is leaving the show at the end of this upcoming season. And the other other bad news is that Zach Braff is leaving Scrubs so that he can go away and make more of his annoying whiny films about how sensitive and emotional he is. More bad news than good on reflection, really.
TV shows lose their stars all the time. Nobody batted an eyelid when Mr Eko left Lost. People weren’t even that sad when George Clooney left ER, because deep down they knew they were losing a first-class doctor but they were gaining a really shit Batman. And we’re all eagerly waiting for the day on Grey’s Anatomy when wolves attack Katherine Heigl’s face off until she leaves.
But it’s different with Scrubs. If Zach Braff were ever to leave Scrubs then there’d be nobody left to do the show’s trademark “You know, when you work in a hospital you discover just how much your friends matter to you,” cloying voiceover. Who’s going to do that? Dr Kelso? Hardly! Lol!!!
However, the unthinkable has happened and Zach Braff has announced that he’s leaving Scrubs at the end of this season. That’s right – a man who you sort of find annoying although you don’t know why is leaving a show you hardly ever watch. This is a bloody tragedy. Variety reports:
This upcoming season of “Scrubs” will the actor’s last, said showrunner Bill Lawrence at Wednesday’s Television Critics Assn. press tour panel. “The end of the show will be about J.D. leaving the hospital,” Lawrence said. “When you leave, it’s about holding on to your relationships.”
Why is Zach Braff leaving Scrubs? Because he’s wasted there, that’s why. The longer he stays on Scrubs, the longer he’ll be typecast as the puppy-eyed lovelorn goofball – but once he’s through with Scrubs he’ll have more time to write, produce and direct his own movies where he can play the puppy-eyed lovelorn goofball on his own terms.
But don’t worry if you think that Zach Braff leaving Scrubs will finish the show off for good. Bill Lawrence has announced that Scrubs is going to start aping ER – a show that continued hiring new actors as the old actors left.
So, like ER, Scrubs isn’t going to die. It’ll keep going for a few more years, then eventually most people will assume that it was axed when it wasn’t and then it’ll die and nobody will notice.
