After Monday's little diversion into 'Phil Spector wanting to shoot every woman on planet Earth in the face' territory, the Phil Spector murder trial is back on course, listening to people talk about how depressed Lana Clarkson was.
To help the people of the jury figure out once and for all whether Phil Spector murdered Lana Clarkson or Lana Clarkson murdered Lana Clarkson, Phil Spector's defence yesterday called Jennifer Hayes-Riedl as a witness – a friend of Lana Clarkson who couldn't stop talking about depressed Clarkson was right before she died. Not only that, but Jennifer Hayes-Riedl's physical resemblance to Lana Clarkson is unusually strong, and it's thought that the defence is planning to use the fact that Phil Spector didn't take one look at Hayes-Riedl, hurdle across the courtroom screaming "you fucking cunt" and shoot her in the face wiggling his lesbian hair like a Beatle as proof that he probably didn't kill Lana Clarkson.
Both the defence for and the prosecution against Phil Spector in the Phil Spector murder trial are really doing bang-up jobs. Well, maybe Phil Spector's forensics expert shouldn't have stolen that fingernail and maybe the defence lawyers shouldn't have pretended that Lana Clarkson was a nutter who saw ghosts when really she once just saw a shadow move across a wall, but on the whole the whole Phil Spector murder trial is pretty evenly matched.
On the one side, the prosecution claims that Phil Spector is a man who has tried to rape a woman at gunpoint, calls women "fucking cunts" and claims that all these "fucking cunts" deserve to be shot in the face and who forced Lana Clarkson to perform a sex act on him then murdered her and told his driver that he murdered her. On the other hand, the defence has claimed that Phil Spector is a midget and Lana Clarkson got quite sad sometimes. Even Stevens, we'd say.
OK, so maybe Lana Clarkson got a bit more than quite sad. It seems there's no end of people who want to come forward and tell the Phil Spector jury just how depressed Lana Clarkson was before she died. The latest of these was Lana Clarkson's friend Jennifer Hayes-Riedl, who painted a pretty bleak picture of her dead pal yesterday, as the Washington Post reports:
The witness said that during their friendship she had never seen the 40-year-old Clarkson so defeated. She said the last straw was Clarkson's decision to take a $9-an-hour job as a hostess at the House of Blues, a job she found humiliating. "She was out of her mind depressed," said Hayes-Riedl. "She was crying as if she'd had it. Those were her exact words. … She said, 'I've had it. I'm exhausted, I'm tired, I can't believe I'm doing this job for nine dollars an hour. I can't believe I'm borrowing clothes from my friends to work at a nine-dollar-an-hour job pulling out chairs for people I used to beat out for jobs. It's horrible.'"
Not only that, but Hayes-Riedl also claimed that Clarkson had a lot of experience with guns and was also regularly mixing painkillers with alcohol. Jennifer Hayes-Riedl's testimony may have been a centrepiece of Phil Spector's defence strategy, but the defence runs the risk of over-egging the whole depression angle. After all, it goes without saying that Lana Clarkson was depressed – you'd have to be pretty depressed to accept an offer to go back to a tiny creepy old man's castle to suck him off, wouldn't you.
However, Phil Spector's defence still has a lot of witness to call and a lot of time left to make its arguments, so maybe it'll be able to convince us of Phil Spector's innocence in the normal course of things. And anyway, Phil Spector's hair has changed colour – and auburn means innocent, right?

If everybody on $9 an hour decides to shoot themselves it may well sort out the Worlds overcrowding problem but it seems a bit drastic to me.

How many people go to a stranger’s home, find the stranger’s gun and then kill themselves in a stranger’s home?
There are how many OTHER ways to kill yourself – this is not one that I have ever heard of before – killing yourself at a stranger’s house.
Interesting. I wonder what the statistics are of this happening – how many people kill themselves at a stranger’s house?
