Remember Greyson Chance? The YouTube boy who sang Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi with an unnecessary amount of sincerity?
Sure you do. He was a genuine YouTube phenomenon, just like that video of a monkey riding a Segway. Anyway, it doesn’t matter if you can remember Greyson Chance or not, because his ascent to dickish megastardom has just begun in earnest. Greyson may only be 12 years old, but that hasn’t stopped Ellen DeGeneres from creating her own record company just to sign him – and she’s got Madonna‘s manager and Lady Gaga’s manager to look after him.
It’s brilliant news. We can’t wait to see who Ellen DeGeneres signs after Greyson Chance. Will it be the Chocolate Rain boy? Or what about the hedgehog that ate that carrot in a funny way 18 months ago? Oh, we’re so excited.
Admit it – right from the moment you saw 12-year-old Greyson Chance perform Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi in the style of Jeff Buckley being jabbed in the ribs with a World War One bayonet on YouTube, you knew he was going to be huge. It was his total confidence, it was the way that the girls in the audience visibly swooned each time he opened his mouth, it was his Pete Beale haircut. Yes, let’s all agree right now that – like it or not – Greyson Chance is going to be gigantic.
And Ellen DeGeneres is the one who’ll get rich from it. After inviting him onto her show two weeks ago, Ellen has decided that Greyson Chance will be such a sensation that she’s set up her own record label, with the express intention of making him her first signing. Fox reports:
On Wednesday’s episode of Ellen, the talk show host and American Idol judge said the first artist signed to her label would be Greyson Chance , the sixth grader whose cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” became an Internet sensation. “Greyson … inspired me to start a record label called eleveneleven. He is my first artist and we are making a record together,” DeGeneres said.
This is obviously a brilliant move. Look at Justin Bieber – his association with Usher taught him valuable lessons about being cool and driving female fans crazy. So we can expect exactly the same thing now that Greyson Chance is associating himself with Ellen DeGeneres- you know, so long as you replace ‘being cool’ with ‘having a sensible haircut’ and ‘driving female fans crazy’ with ‘crying about dogs on the television a lot’. Well done, Greyson!

Geeze, pretty cynical. Do you eat nuts and bolts for breakfast too, and more importantly, does this website or anyone else actually pay you just to bare your dark heart? I suggest therapy, stat.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

LMAO! Good one Troy! Yeah, the writer of this article seemed “assy” for lack of better word. Im sure he’ll do well, but I hope its not all very pop fruity, I hope Greyson gets inspiration and maybe gets a style close to Gaga

Jealous much Stuart? Those who can, do. Those who can’t, criticize.

Precocious raw talent about sums up my impression of Greyson – and I am decidedly NOT a fan of Tween sensations, internet or otherwise. He is a totally unexpected and refreshing surprise in that regard. I’m relieved that Ellen has chosen to take him under her wing because otherwise I’d have serious reservations about what the less savory elements of the industry would do him. In light of his new associations with Ellen and the managers for both Lady Gaga and Madonna, I expect Greyson’s talent will just be starting to mature around the time Justin Bieber remnants are selling on EBay among collectors of nostalgic artifacts.
