The Real World is the grandpa of reality TV – a 17-season marathon of attention-seeking idiots all self-consciously arguing with each other, like Big Brother, only without the ability to make people cry by voting them off the show.
And, since The Real World is the oldest reality television show around, it's only right that some of its stars are head and shoulders above the rest of the reality TV crop for flat-out terrifying behaviour. Like Paula Ann Meronek, who was arraigned on a misdemeanor assault charge on Sunday night for apparently taking several bites out of her boyfriend during an argument.
Our recent theory that reality TV shows attract the very worst kind of horrible wankers – invented after a guy from Survivor shot a puppy with a bow and arrow – looks like it's continuing to gather speed. Exhibit A: Jayne from Big Brother. Exhibit B: Paula Ann Meronek from The Real World.
Oh, you know The Real World. It's MTV's longest-running show, and Channel 4 tried showing during the summer holidays a few years ago, before realising that people wanted to watch Saved By The Bell and not seven self-absorbed morons yammer on about themselves until the end of time. The Real World is in its 17th season, The Real World: Key West, and the liveliest thing to happen in it seems to have taken place after the series finished filming – Paula Ann Meronek, one of the show's stars – has been arraigned for allegedly biting her boyfriend John Alyward over and over again during a confrontation.
E! Online reports that the reason Paula Meronek, well known in the series for being a mostly-drunk bisexual anorexic with an ex-boyfriend who beat her up so badly that she ended up in hospital, got in trouble with the police was:
According the the Middletown Press, the incident followed an argument the couple had earlier in the evening. Police say that Meronek had left the home after a lover's quarrel, the basis of which was not known, only to return later in the night. Police say Meronek had forgotten her keys and was waiting outside for Alyward. When he arrived shortly after, his own keys in hand, he let himself in but refused to extend the same courtesy to his girlfriend.
At that point, Paula Ann Meronek is said to have started biting Alyward about the arms and legs until he called the police, who promptly arrested the pair of them; Meronek for all the chompy chompy work and Alyward for not letting his girlfriend into her own home.
Biting a man is hardly shooting a puppy with a bow and arrow, but it still goes to show that being on a reality TV show does funny things to your brain. If we were any of the nobodies on Love Island, we'd be terrified.
