Uma Thurman is all sweetness and light these days. Despite her marriage to Ethan Hawke breaking up in a whirlwind of rumours about infidelities on both their parts, Uma refuses to say a bad word about Ethan.
Wait, that's a rubbish story. Uma Thurman being quite nice to someone she used to get married to? Where's the fun in that? Perhaps Uma Thurman will be able to say a bad word about other stuff she's had a hand in, instead, like Be Cool or Paycheck or being the second worst thing in The Producers or Prime or any of the other rubbish films she's been in lately.
You may think you know Uma Thurman as the ass-kicking, woman-from-Splash-killing star of Kill Bill, or the unconvincingly shit love interest of Paycheck, but you don't know Uma Thurman. You don't know the pain of being married to Gary Oldman for a bit and then divorcing him and then being married to Ethan Hawke for a bit and then divorcing him and then going out with some hotel bloke for a bit and then splitting up with him too.
But Uma Thurman is in a new film that's coming out soon and – even though it looks like a flaky, lightweight comedy about a girl that can fly – Uma's treating it as if it were the biggest, most profound statement on female liberation since Emily Davison threw herself underneath a horse. Bless her. Critically, this means that Uma Thurman can talk about how hard it is being a mother these days to Parade magazine:
"I've learned that every working mom is a superwoman. For most of the world, it's really a necessity. The stay-at-home mom is over not just because of women's liberation but because of men's liberation from wanting to be the breadwinners. I have a great career and two healthy, beautiful, smart and funny children. We're an incredibly tight-knit threesome, and we have so much fun together."
And as soon as Uma Thurman started on her kids, she invited questions about the breakup of her marriage to Ethan Hawke. Ethan and Uma were together for five years before separating in 2003, and they have two children together. For years there have been rumours, never fully explained, that one of them might have cheated on the other one. Now she's back in magazines, this would have been the perfect opportunity to stick the boot into Ethan. But did she? Did she bollocks:
"I cannot participate in anything critical about my children's father. I just need to keep peace. I think it's fair to say that I haven't said one mean thing, and I'm not going to start now. It's terrible for my family."
Screw your family, Uma, think about us.
