U2 have got their act pretty much sewn up. Make an album that sounds like a U2 album from 1986, tour the nuts off it and make a heap more cash than anybody else. Oh, and save the world and stuff.
The Billboard abacus has recently been dusted off to work out the top-grossing tours of 2005. And the U2 Vertigo tour has come out on top, making U2 $260 million – more than the PPP Gross National Product of Kiribati. That’s a lot of money just for going "doo doo doo," on a stage.
According to Billboard, more than three million people across 90
concerts paid money to watch U2 (CDs) perform as part of their Vertigo tour
this year, spending around $86 dollars each. Almost £50 to watch a tiny
man dance with a girl on stage? Like we said, U2 have it sewn up.
U2 also scored Billboard‘s ‘Boxscore Of The Year’ for their homecoming shows in Dublin’s Croke Park,
as U2 played to 247,000 fans between June 24-27 and netted themselves a
cool $21.1 million in the process. Which, however you look at it, kind
of makes up for the weird patch that U2 had at around the same time
when Bono and U2 sued their stylist for stealing a pair of their trousers.
But U2 weren’t the only bunch of people to get obscenely rich by
going on tour. Loved by Journey South, ‘we hate each other but we’re
rich’ rockers The Eagles came second on the Billboard tour list, by playing 77 shows and making $117 million. Third was occasional Sesame
Street star Neil Diamond, who netted $71 million on tour; and fourth
was divorce fraudster cowboy Kenny Chesney, who made $63 million.
According to Billboard, the rest of the top ten money-making tour-machines are Paul McCartney ($60
million), Rod Stewart ($49 million), Elton John ($45.5 million touring,
plus another $30 million via his Las Vegas show "The Red Piano"), Dave
Matthews Band ($45 million), Jimmy Buffett ($41 million) and Green Day
($36.5 million).
