Everyone – clear your calenders on July 4th 2007. Because a movie that will either be pant-wettingly amazing or the very worst film in the history of the world will be released on that date – a new Transformers movie.
It was going to be released at the end of next year, but the writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci buggered off for a bit to help knock Mission: Impossible III into shape, so now the Transformers movie will be released in July 2007.
Trying to weigh up whether Transformers will be good or not is a
pretty hard job. On the plus side, it’s going to be about giant robots
smashing each other to fiery pieces, and Steven ‘Sorry about ending War
Of The Worlds so badly, I kinda got bored’ Spielberg is executive
producing – and he invented the summer blockbuster.
On the negative side, it’s going to be a film about rubbish
children’s toys that inspired an equally rubbish brand of 10p pickled
onion flavoured crisps, and Michael ‘Why don’t we replace all the
characters with screaming and explosions?’ Bay will direct it – a man
who defines ‘subtlety’ as ‘only blowing up three petrol stations in a
film’.
"Under the direction of Michael Bay, and with Steven Spielberg
executive producing, we know that Transformers is going to be the kind
of explosive action movie that is perfect for the height of the summer
movie season. By staking our claim on the 4th of July, 2007, we ensure
that we not only have the time to make this movie the way it should be
made, but also to build excitement and awareness leading up to its
release," Jim Tharp, head of distribution at DreamWorks said in a statement.
Brian Goldner, a big wig at Hasbro – who make Transformers toy – added "Fans
around the world have wanted a Transformers live-action movie for a
long time and we are thrilled to work with DreamWorks and Paramount to
bring this legendary saga to life on the big screen."
It’s already clear that Paramount and DreamWorks want to start
making a very loud noise about Transformers. At this week’s Comic-Con
in San Diego there will be a massive 18-wheeler truck advertising the
movie, and the official website will also be launched at the convention.
We have just under two years of intense Transformers hype on the way. Let’s hope that the finished product ends up matching it.
eBay.co.uk have 1171 different Transformer toys on sale that made us go all weepy and nostalgic.

Excuse me? The Transformers were not a bunch of trashy children’s toys! Eighties children like myself will sic Ravage and Lazer Beak on you if you keep that in there!
