It was the birthday of Katie Holmes at the weekend. And how did Tom Cruise celebrate? A trip to a toy store, steakhouse and bar. Tom – that’s not very spazzy, you’re letting us down.

What’s that? Tom Cruise also did a bunch of handstands on a piano? Oh, thank God for that. Business as usual, then.

Sometimes we think Tom Cruise (DVDs) only has one mode – ostentatious and attention-grabbing. Look at the way he proposed on top of the Eiffel Tower and then told everyone about it. Or how he bought an expensive sonogram machine to peer at his uterus-bound child instead of just visiting a hospital for a look.

And on Thursday, to celebrate the birthday of his baby incubator
girlfriend Katie Holmes, Tom took Katie out for a night on the tiles in
New York. Firstly, according to reports, Tom mooched about on his own
in a hotel room while Katie went out shopping for the day, only to join her at the Post House Steakhouse for a meal with around a dozen
friends. So far so normal, right?

Then – later that night – Tom Cruise took Katie Holmes out to a specially-opened toy store, and that’s where things go a bit odd. Obviously, as a movie star, Tom Cruise is able to call shops and ask them to open especially for him to wander around willy nilly. And filling the store with balloons tied to tiny fur tigers is a bit strange, but Tom’s loaded – he can afford to do it. Then, People reports, Tom and Katie found the giant piano:

The real show was put on by Tom and his fiancee, with both of
them performing on top of the store’s giant piano – jumping, bouncing,
trying to tickle out a tune on the ivories. At one point, Tom did a
handstand. Katie must have approved: She clapped and laughed before the couple embraced and shared a long, 30-second kiss.

After leaving the toy store, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes whisked themselves off to Central Park for a bit of an ice skating session, like in that scene from King Kong – but with a slightly less believable couple.
