In a manner not too dissimilar to that of Futurama’s TV chef Elzar, we’re going to take it up a notch here: BAM! The world of free games just welcomed a new son into its midst, one full of psychics, violence, a crap story and some of the best pure fun you can have in [...]

SLACKERJACK – Command & Conquer

by Ian Dransfield

How’s about something a bit different for today’s SLACKERJACK? So, you’ll need to actually download something (a fair bit, actually), install it and spend more than four minutes playing it, but… well… it’s Command and Conquer, for free, so shut up. The original from the multi-million selling series, released about a billion years ago and [...]

You! Have A Free Sigur Ros Song

by Matthew Laidlow

Like the title suggests, yet another high profile band is giving its music away for free. Not because it’s shit or anything, but purely down to the fact everyone else is doing so.

Sigur Ros creates some of the most amazing music known to man/woman/child/budgie. The epic vocals of singer Jonsi are totally unique and nothing like we’ve heard before. Combined with gorgeous fragile music that has the power to stop you in your tracks, the band is nothing short of amazing. Icelandic may not be the first language of everyone, but this does not matter at all – the songs sound better then they ever would do then if Chas & Dave were to give them the old cockney treatment.

Gobbledigook is taken from the bands fifth album Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (With a buzz in our ears we play endlessly). The new record is set for release at the end of June and we can’t wait. If it’s anything like this song, it won’t disappoint. Oh, that buzz in your ears may be tinnitus. Best get it checked out.

Coldplay Single Downloaded By 2m, Enjoyed By Far Fewer

by Stuart Heritage

Hey everyone, Coldplay are back! Finally, drearily self-important, emotionally hollow stadium rock for people who don’t like music has a voice again!

To mark their return, Coldplay recently decided to release their new single Violet Hill as a free download. And apparently Violet Hill has now been downloaded by two million people eager to hear Coldplay’s Spanish-influenced, Brian Eno-helmed new direction.

Sadly there aren’t any figures for how many people only listened to Violet Hill once, rolled their eyes because it’s exactly the same as every other Coldplay song ever written and instantly deleted it from their iTunes library. We’re guessing it’s just a shade off two million.

Nine Inch Nails: Here, Have Some More Rubbish Music For Free

by Stuart Heritage

Nine Inch Nails have always been pioneers, first in making rubbish music for sad idiots and now in innovative distribution methods.

Following an experiment with some self-indulgent noodly-doodly instrumental tracks earlier this year, Nine Inch Nails has decided to give its new album away to fans for free, without even an option to pay anything, until it comes out on CD when you suckers will have to cough up.

This move by Nine Inch Nails obviously has its critics, who claim that giving away music for free devalues it to the point where it becomes worthless. But these critics are plainly fools – the music of Nine Inch Nails has always been kind of worthless to everyone except for panda-eyed 13-year-olds with BO and a low-level interest in self harm. This just levels the playing field out a bit.

Coldplay Try And Do A Radiohead

by Matthew Laidlow

Last year the music industry cacked itself senseless as Radiohead decided to break the monotonous music industry procedures.

Others have since copied Radiohead and given their music away for free. And today another major band is set to do the same. Coldplay may not be everyone’s band of choice, but anything free is usually welcomed by all.

At 12.15pm GMT, you can download new single Violet Hill for nothing! Though we recommend visiting at 1pm as the website will probably crash due to heavy web traffic passing through early on. And because you don’t like Coldplay enough to download it immediately. Nobody does.

Not quite as spectacular as Radiohead, but still shows that big bands are shunning the traditional system of distributing music. However, if you do want to own a physical copy of the newColdplay single, you can sell your soul to the NME. It plans to give away a 7” copy of the single along with a non-album track.

Have A New Ladyton Song For Free, Go On

by C J Davies

Here at hecklerspray, we love Ladytron more than a sackful of Baby Jesuses.

Their albums Light And Magic and Witching Hour have contained some of the most pleasurable pop moments of the decade, so we were mightily pleased to hear that they’ve got a new album coming out: Velocifero, hitting those shelves on June 8th.

What’s that? Not convinced by our glowing endorsement of the group? Want to hear a track from the forthcoming album, do you, so that you can start putting aside the 20p per week you get from your ‘glamorous’ career in Media Sales? Well, you’re in luck.

Being the nice types they are, Ladytron have put the first track from Velocifero – a ditty entitled Black Cat – on their site for you to download. For free. And you know what? It’s a killer – all sultry glacial posturing over a set of heroin-addictive beats, exactly the stuff we cherish ‘em for.

Hardly Anyone Pays For Radiohead’s New Album

by Stuart Heritage

When Radiohead announced that fans could pay whatever they wanted for new album In Rainbows, it was meant to show that a band could trust its fans to acknowledge all the work that goes into an album’s creation and pay accordingly.

Yeah, hasn’t happened. Of all the people who downloaded In Rainbows last month, less than half of them actually paid anything at all for it, it’s been revealed. According to researchers ComScore, only about 40% of people who downloaded In Rainbows by Radiohead decided that paying money to hear it was a good idea, spending an average sum of just $2.26 for it. Although this could be seen as a disastrous embarrassment for Radiohead, the band shouldn’t get too downhearted – after all, most bands would struggle to charge $2.26 for a bunch of songs that sound like a bunch of Broken Social Scene B-sides in the first place.
