Now that the Winter Olympics is underway, the thoughts of the nation naturally fall to the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Award 2006. Well, ours do, anyway. That and the way that ice skater busted her leg last week.
Anyway, it’s a certainty that – unless something incredible happens – none of the Great Britain Winter Olympic squad are going to win Sports Personality Of The Year. Because they’re all rubbish and get excited about coming 11th in skiing events.
But who’ll win the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Award 2006? We’ve got another three contenders to look at today, that you can bet on. Because betting is great.
So here are another batch of Sports Personality Of The Year betting odds – for Andrew Murray, Colin Montgomery and David Beckham with help from SportingOdds.com…
Andrew Murray – It can’t be easy being a British tennis player.
Ancient rules state that only one British tennis player can be vaguely
decent at tennis at a time. Now that Tim Henman has gone permanently
off the boil, young Andrew Murray is the nation’s bright hope. What
that means in real terms is that nobody thinks about him for most of
the year and then shouts his name obsessively during Wimbledon,
throwing their unattainable expectations behind him until his
inevitable quarter-final knock-out. Does that deserve Sports
Personality Of The Year? Well, if Andrew Murray wins Wimbledon it does.
But he won’t, so it doesn’t. Current Sports Personality Of The Year
betting odds – 16/1
Colin Montgomery – It’s a fact that Colin Montgomery is now more
famous for getting divorced than for playing golf. And, as far as we’re
aware, divorce isn’t a sport that qualifies you for Sports Personality
Of The Year. If it was, then Heather Locklear might win it – and that’s
a situation that nobody wants to be in. Anyway, as far as golf goes,
all we know about Colin Montgomery comes from the PS2 game Tiger Woods
PGA Tour 2004. And from that we know that Colin Montgomery isn’t as
good as Tiger Woods, but he’d better than the creepy mafia character.
Hope that helps. Current Sports Personality Of The Year betting odds –
16/1
David Beckham – David Beckham, on the other hand, is more famous for
selling chocolate covered nuts to the Japanese and having a
weird-looking wife than for playing football. But this is a World Cup
year, and David Beckham is the captain of England, so if he was ever
going to win Sports Personality Of The Year, it’d be this year. Unless
he spazzes out and kicks an Argentinian which – let’s face it – isn’t
out of the question. Current Sports Personality Of The Year betting
odds – 9/2
Don’t forget – the earlier you bet on Sports Personality Of The
Year, the better odds you’ll probably get. Throughout 2006 we’ll keep
returning to some of the names in the running for Sports Personality Of
The Year, but don’t forget that you can check the full list of betting
odds at any time at SportingOdds.com, where your first bet will be
matched. Good luck!

Colin says
How can Beckham be up for sports personailty of the year? Surely you need to have a personality for that, something he seems to be lacking.
