In England, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame isn’t really a hall of fame at all: it’s a night in a big room with Dermot O’Leary talking bum about The Who.
But in America, the original Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame really is a hall. And, seeing as theirs exists and ours doesn’t, their one is probably a bit better. And what’s more, it’s been announced that The Sex Pistols, Miles Davies, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blondie will all be inducted into the Hall Of Fame next year.
The 2006 induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of fame will take
place on March 13 in New York, and is being seen as late victory for
the majority of the bands involved, such as Black Sabbath, Lynyrd
Skynyrd and The Sex Pistols (CDs).
The reason that these performers aren’t already in the Rock And Roll
Hall Of Fame could be down to the voting procedure; bands don’t become
eligible for admission until 25 years after their first recording, and
then a shortlist of groups are sent round to a group of 700
international shadowy ‘rock experts’ who give the nod to a select few.
This voting method means that Black Sabbath and Lynyrd Skynyrd have
both been rejected for Hall Of Fame inclusion seven times each,
something which has got Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward a bit narky. He
told Reuters:
"It’s about time. What
bothered me was not necessarily that Black Sabbath was being passed
over but that hard rock and heavy metal was being passed over… Bands
that created heavy metal music or brought it into the foreground ought
to have gone into the hall of fame some time ago, quite honestly."
While Reuters reports about plane crash decimated Lynyrd Skynyrd:
Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington said he was in "a state of
shock" about the induction, although it was a "bummer" that most of the
band’s current lineup was not included.
As
for The Sex Pistols, they have been rejected four times previously;
something that may or may not have anything to do with Johnny Rotten
once calling the Hall Of Fame "a place where old rockers go to die."

greetings from cleveland. here’s hoping johnny rotten has something special in mind when the sex pistols are inducted. we’re hoping he’ll come to cleveland (the ceremonies are actually in new york) set up in an abandoned warehouse in one of the blighted districts near downtown, invite all of the hookers from carnegie avenue in, and tear the place up with a killer rendition of anarchy in the u.k.
