Back in the 90’s I fucking loved Puff Daddy. “All About the Benjamins (The Rock Remix)” is legit my forever jam. Maybe my favorite rap song of all time. Puffy and the fam (Lil’ Kim, Mase, The Lox) pretty much slayed back in the day, then Puffy changed his name to P. Diddy, then just Diddy, then Diddy Dirty Money, and I kind of just gave up on him.
He decided to make fancy booze drinks instead of rap music and basically everyone forgot he was ever a rapper. I assumed he’d never make a quality jam again, however, with the release of “Finna Get Loose” that has all changed.
When I heard that Puff Daddy and the Family were releasing a new song, I was like “LOL cool, boo. I’m sure it will be amazing #notreally”, but then Blac Chyna, who I don’t follow on Instagram, yet still check her account on the reg to see if she’s throwing any new shade at Kylie Jenner, posted a video of herself grooving to said song, and I was like “Oh damn, that’s kind of fire.” So I gave it a listen, and you know what? It was fire.

This is such a summer jam. So what happened? How did Puffy manage to make such a solid jam again after all these years? I mean, obviously a big part is Pharrell because that man makes some sick beats, but I think the #1 reason Puffy is able to make hits again is pretty obvious: HE CHANGED HIS NAME BACK TO PUFF DADDY!
No one gave a flying fuck about P. Diddy or Diddy or Dippity Doo Dawg, or whatever the fuck else he was calling himself the last 15 years. But Puff Daddy? That guy’s a hit maker. I mean, do I think it’s a coincidence that he hasn’t had a great song since he stopped being Puff Daddy, then once he changes his name back he releases this fire summer jam? No. No I do not.

This piece made me laugh from start to finish. There’s something dangerous about artists buying into their own hype and it usually goes hand in hand with a name change. Need I mention Prince?
