It's a sad sad day for those of us who like to invest in the personal life of actors and actresses who are quite famous but not megastars: Penelope Cruz and Matthew McConaughey have split up.

That's Matthew McConaughey – the sexiest man alive, and Penelope Cruz – the tiny, pouting Mediterranean sex kitten; although you might know them better as that bloke who was in that film about boats we didn't see with the horsey woman from Sex And The City and the woman who's only famous because she went out with Tom Cruise for a bit. Anyway, they've split up. Get over it.

After a few weeks of rumours, it's been officially confirmed that Sahara star Matthew McConaughey and Sahara star Penelope Cruz have split up. And the officially confirmed reason for the Cruz/ McConaughey split isn't the reason we thought – that Matthew McConaughey's constantly balding and then not balding head somehow hypnotised Penelope Cruz into leaving him – but because the jetset filmstar lifestyle has torn them asunder. A statement on behalf of the couple reads:

"[They] have decided to take time off as a couple. Due
to busy work schedules and so much time apart, they mutually decided
four weeks ago that separating was the best thing to do at this time."

It's thought that the strain of sexiest man alive Matthew McConaughey filming We Are…Marshall in America and still quite sexy but not officially so Penelope Cruz filming Manolete in Spain has contributed to the split. But don't be sad, because both Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz seem to have a thing for their co-stars. As well as meeting on the same film, McConaughey and Cruz have also waded through names like Sandra Bullock, Tom Cruise, Ashley Judd and Matt Damon in their time. If we were Adrien Brody or Kate Mara, we'd be bricking it.
