Naomi Campbell is one of the world's premier supermodels. She's also one of the only human beings able to stun a fleeing rabbit by lobbing a phone at it from 35 yards out.
OK, that's not strictly true. As far as we know, Naomi Campbell may have never thrown a mobile phone at a member of the leporidae family. But her former maid claims that she once threw a mobile phone at the back of her head, and so Naomi Campbell ended up in court yesterday to face charges of second-degree assault in a trial that may see her getting banged up for seven years.
Being a model is OK – the jet-set lifestyle, gigantic pay packet and knowledge that the most challenging your working day will ever get involves wearing some clothes and squinting your eyes a bit is what draws so many young girls to the profession. However, being a model has some downsides, too – everyone who talks to you immediately assumes you're about as stupid as Jade Goody's stupid cousin, plus you never really feel really stretched.
That's why so many models have dreadful side-careers. Cindy Crawford made the dreadful Fair Game movie, Claudia Schiffer made the dreadful Reckless And Wild movie, Kate Moss hung out with that dreadful Babyshambles man, and then there's Naomi Campbell.
Naomi Campbell has several pursuits – like her rubbish writing career, her rubbish singing career and allegedly throwing telephones at the back of her maid's head in an angry fit of rage. Although it could be argued that those first two should have landed Naomi Campbell in court on charges of being dreadful, it's only that last one that has.
Yesterday saw Naomi Campbell appear in a New York court for a brief pre-trial hearing after being accused by her old maid Ana Scolavino of throwing her diamond-encrusted mobile phone at the back of the maid's head, causing an injury that needed hospital treatment. In court, Naomi was told that there had been no action to indict her on a charge of second-degree assault yet.
Campbell denies the charges, claiming that Scolavino did it to herself after she got the sack – but if she's found guilty when the case restarts in September, she'll face up to seven years in jail.
This isn't the first time that Naomi Campbell has apparently let her temper get the better of her, an old PA of hers once claimed Naomi smacked her on the head with her phone, and another former employee has just launched a lawsuit against Campbell for twatting her across the head after she couldn't find a pair of jeans.
Hey, Naomi – we didn't mean all that stuff about your records being shit. Please don't throw anything at us.
