Regular readers will have known that us here at hecklerspray spent the last two weeks listing MTV Music Video Awards Odds. But some things you just can’t predict.
Like, for instance, Hurricane Katrina smashing Miami, the MVA host city, into pieces a few days before the ceremony, putting them in jeopardy.
Or fearsome rap boss Suge Knight getting shot at Kanye West‘s big pre-awards party.
Or, strangest of all, Green Day winning seven awards for their shonky Boulevard Of Broken Dreams video.
The MTV MVA awards had a strange build-up. Hurricane Katrina – the fourth
largest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded – tore into Florida on
Thursday, killing 11 people. But the musical community pulled together
and made sure that the world got to see Snoop Dogg wobble about on a
stage for a bit.
Then Suge Knight, founder of Death Row records and a central figure
in the Tupac/Notorious BIG shootings, was apparently relaxing at a party hosted by Kanye West when a man in a hoodie approached
him and shot him in the leg twice. His condition is not thought to be
serious. Not serious enough to stop the annual MTV MVA razzmatazz, at least.
As for the awards themselves, Green Day were the big winners
this year. Their video for Boulevard Of Broken Dreams won seven awards;
for Video Of The Year, Best Group Video, Best Rock Video, Best
Direction, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and the Viewer’s Choice Award.
We’re just a teeny bit surprised by this, to be honest. The
video is just three middle-aged clowns walking around in front of a
projection of a desert with some grainy, old cinema-style flickers and
scratches superimposed, the kind most computers have on their movie maker program.
Plus, even though the song is just a man mumbling about how he always
walks alone, in the video he clearly isn’t walking alone. We demand a
recount.
Green Day didn’t win every single award, though. Jesus Walks by Kanye West won Best Male Video, Since U Been Gone by
Kelly Clarkson won and Best Female Video and Best Pop Video, Number One Spot by Ludacris took Best Rap Video, Karma by
Alicia Keys won Best R&B Video, Lose Control by Missy Elliott took
Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Dance Video, and The Killers were named
Best New Artists.
As usual, the MTV Music Video awards would be the MTV Music Video
Awards without some inanely over-the-top performances. And this year was no exception.
Odd highlights
this year came when Diddy conducted a full orchestra as Snoop Dogg
rapped a tribute to Notorious BIG, and 50 Cent performing a medley to
the sound of 500 tambourines. But even this chronic weirdness was
outdone by the return of MC Hammer, who treated everyone to a
performance of U Can’t Touch This.
