Ms Dynamite – the woman who won a Mercury Prize for her first album and then swiftly became even less famous than the tramp who dresses like The Pope in Canterbury sometimes – is in hospital after crashing her car at 100mph for a TV show.
Yesterday saw the final of Sky One's The Race, the show where a bunch of nano-celebrities get to drive all manner of cars at ridiculously dangerous speeds. The final of The Race involved some people who you might half-recognise at best bombing round Silverstone in Formula Ford cars. Inevitably, though, the race ended in near tragedy as Ms Dynamite was involved in a 100mph crash with the bloke from AC/DC and is now in hospital.
The Race is an incredibly strange TV show to watch. Not because of the format – some people famous enough to be on a reality TV show but not a reality TV show on a terrestrial TV channel drive around in cars and then make a number of offensively sexist jokes to each other while everyone studiously tries to avoid mentioning the word 'divorce' in front of Ingrid Tarrant – but because it's being broadcast so soon after Richard Hammond's horrible car crash.
It was only two months ago that Richard Hammond smashed his brain up while trying to break a land speed record, only to be offered a private concert by The Sugababes and then somehow credit Lego with saving his life. General consensus says that only an incredibly rare streak of good fortune stopped Richard Hammond from being smeared all over a field that day, and that a similar accident would probably happen again if famous people kept monging around irresponsibly in cars. And yesterday it did, only the accident was less serious and happened to someone quite a lot less famous.
One of the contestants on The Race – along with Her Out Of Atomic Kitten and That Bloke What Did The Song About Cars – was Ms Dynamite, the socially-conscious rapper with the title usually reserved for middle-aged divorcees and pernicity schoolteachers who don't want their students to ask why they're 40 years old and still unmarried. After about two people on the planet bought her last album, Ms Dynamite is now more famous for slapping policewomen than for making music, and now she's become a reality TV star, albeit one who's in hospital for busting herself up at 100mph in a crash with the singer from AC/DC, as BBC News reports:
The London-born R&B star, 25, was treated at the track's medical centre and was said to have been conscious. She was later taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. The hospital said on Sunday that she would be kept in overnight for observation. A Sky One spokesman said the collision on Sunday afternoon sent Ms Dynamite's Formula Ford spinning down the track for about 50 metres before it came to a halt. She may have been travelling at more than 100mph when the accident happened, he said.
Luckily it seems as if Ms Dynamite has escaped any serious injury from her 100mph car crash, but that hasn't stopped all of Ms Dynamite's fans from banding together Richard Hammond-style and donating money to improve the service of the local air ambulance. Thanks to them, people involved in similar accidents will soon be able to travel to hospital in style, just as soon as they've scrabbled together enough cash to be able to afford that Magic Tree air freshener. £1.99's a lot of money, you know.
