What do you look for in an awards ceremony host? A quick mind? A congenial outlook? A big fat belly, two waggly eyebrows and a CV including a drearily long film about a big monkey? Well, hey, you're in luck!
When the MTV VMA awards take place at the end of the month, the host will be none other than School Of Rock star Jack Black, who'll no doubt bring his trademark brand of understated wit to proceedings. Either that or Jack Black will spend the duration of the MTV VMAs rolling his eyes and yelling about thunder and gods all the time just like every other time he's on TV. Oh, he's so hard to second guess, that Jack Black.
The MTV VMA Awards will take place in New York on August 31, and are – like every year – inspiring a mixture of equal parts dread and excitement across the world. Dread because the Red Hot Chili Peppers look almost certain to slog through at least a couple of their bloated stadium corpse-funk numbers during the show, and excitement because Shakira got a load of MTV VMA nominations so she'll have to turn up at one point or another.
But now the MTV VMAs have a host – Jack Black. Although Jack Black is more famous for acting in School Of Rock, King Kong and that thing he did with a computer monitor on his head than for actually hosting anything, MTV is hoping that Jack – the first comedian to present the MTV Video Music Awards in three years – will bring the right amount of goofy fun to the awards. And – unless all that stress of having a baby or almost getting his arms eaten off by a big toothy penis thing in King Kong has worn him out – that's exactly what we'll be getting, if the statement Jack Black gave to announce his MTV VMA gig is anything to go by:
"Prepare yourself for a rip-snortin' humdinger. I am Jables, hear me roar."
Still. Even the prospect of Jack Black hilariously rolling his eyes, bobbing his eyebrows and bragging in a mock-heroic way throughout the entirety of the MTV VMAs can only be better than the spectacular cock-up of getting Diddy to host them last year. And Shakira will always be there, so things can't be that bad.
