Prior to The Brit Awards in February, folk music still confused and bewildered the majority of people. Say ?folk? and the images conjured up were those of scruffy individuals who camped in fields, sewed carrier bags together to make clothing, lived in caravans and drank nothing but cider whilst huddled round a campfire. Even if the sun was beating down in the middle of the afternoon.
But all of this imagery has been washed away thanks to Mumford & Sons, a band who look like they've come straight out of a church to awkwardly play songs that are now lapped up by the masses.
Go to any trendy hairdressers and amongst the coffee table books by Banksy, you\’ll hear that lot playing in the background. Seeing folk music is the flavour of the month at the moment, we've had a look at another act doing things a little better.
Its early days for Melodica, Melody + Me who have created the sort of sound that could be used to tempt the sun to come out from behind the clouds.
Layered with influences that stem in to reggae and African rhythms, this isn't a straight forward case of the band sticking to what they know. Instead, all sorts of musical instrumentation is used to create something that could implode under its own complexness, but instead works a charm.
Single, ‘Come Outside’ is unleashed on the public in the coming weeks and we can't falter this charming release that makes want to do just that and actually experience that emotion people call happiness.
Unlike a lot of music that contains nothing but grim thoughts on heartache, chilling in clubs with bitches and shooting up a rival gang, this is the sort of song that could be sung by a man in a pub who picks up an acoustic guitar and engages everyone around him.
As we've already mentioned, the easy comparison would be Mumford & Sons, but we see them more like another folk act we've liked, Tunng. Whilst our knowledge of Melodica, Melody + Me is limited for now, they do give off a similar feel good vibe.
we're not the first people to sing their praises, The Guardian and Q Magazine also give them the musical thumbs up and after a listen, we're sure you will too.
The single ?Come Outside? is released on the 18th April from all good and bad record shops the usual faceless MP3 retailers.

I saw them supporting Bombay Bicycle Club last summer at Union Chapel, they where great and their drummer is the quirkiest looking girl I’ve ever seen (in a good way, I think)
