It's always sad news when a celebrity couple splits up, even if it's a celebrity couple that nobody especially cared about in the first place like Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams.
It's been confirmed that Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams have ended their three-year relationship after what's being described as 'a rocky patch'. As yet, nobody is coming forward to suggest what could have been rocky enough to split Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams up, though – maybe it was their infant daughter or their rumoured secret marriage earlier this year – but new of the split has still come as shock because Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams always seemed like such a normal couple. Actually, scrap that – we only just said that Heath and Michelle were normal because they're so dull that we couldn't be arsed to follow their relationship at all. And now we don't need to.
It's not that rare for couples to meet on film sets – Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman fell in love on the set of Days Of Thunder, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie fell in love on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith and Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn fell in love on the set of The Break-Up, making them the only two people to actually ever experience a positive emotion from the film – and Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams were no different, meeting on the set of Brokeback Mountain, possibly because having a relationship with a female co-star was an easier way for Heath Ledger to assert his heterosexuality on the set of a film about gay cowboys than drawing hairs on his chest with a biro and loudly talking about sport all the time.
But Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams beat the odds – they even stayed together long enough to have a daughter, proving that they were in the relationship for the long-haul – and as recently as January it was being rumoured that Heath and Michelle had got married in secret. Which is a sweet and tender enough story, right up to the moment that you realise Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams have split up. The New York Daily News reports:
"Brokeback Mountain" lovebirds Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams are breaking up after three years together, People magazine reported on its Web site. The actors, who bought a $3.5 million brownstone in Brooklyn's trendy Boerum Hill two years ago, say their split is amicable. "It was rocky for a while," a source close to the couple told the magazine. "They did what they could to make it work." The Australian-born Ledger, 28, and Williams, who turns 27 on Sunday, have a daughter, Matilda, who will turn 2 years old next month.
Since no details have been released on the Heath Ledger/ Michelle Williams split, we're going to have to wildly speculate and suggest that their shared Brokeback Mountain experience, which saw the movie win enough awards to sink a medium-sized boat with, happened to long ago that the artificial movie heat of seeing your boyfriend bumming Donnie Darko in a tent must have simply worn off.
Still, at least Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams can both throw themselves into their work to get over the split. Now that Heath Ledger is The Joker in the next Batman movie, he can concentrate on giving the best possible portrayal of an iconic comic book character, while Michelle Williams can focus on… well, there's the baby, we suppose.
