What was the best thing about The Terminator movies? The acting? Don’t be daft – it was all the car chases and explosions and scenes of massive robot death.
What would be the best way to preserve the legacy of these ridiculously expensive blockbuster movies? Fox has an idea – it’s going to make a cheapo family drama TV series based on The Terminator movies.
The Terminator (DVDs) series that Fox has announced is said to focus on the
period of time between the second and third Terminator movies, with
Sarah and John Connor as main characters.
Variety reports that The Sarah Connor Chronicles, as the show is
tentatively called, will explore what happened to Sarah Connor after
she went on the run at the end of Terminator 2. Producer James
Middleton said:
"She has the weight of the world on her shoulder and
she also has to raise a 14-year-old son who may be the salvation of the
world."
Don’t expect too many spectacular scenes in the new
Terminator series, though. Josh Friedman is writing the pilot, and he is
completely aware of the tiny skinflint budget that The Sarah Connor
Chronicles will probably be given, noting that the series will have:
"a lot of big ideas in it that don’t cost you a dime to explore."
Oh
great. Lots of talking about feelings, then. Josh Friedman also wrote the script for this year’s
War Of The Worlds, so expect each episode to end with a giant
disappointing cop-out.
If The Sarah Connors Chronicles is a success, there are talks for it
to link to brand-new Terminator movie trilogy. Terminator 4 is also
apparently in the works.
Sadly, Arnold Schwarzenegger probably won’t get to star in the
Terminator TV series – now he’s the governor of California he has
bigger fish to fry, like getting defeated in all kinds of legislative
elections and wanting to destroy the moon so that women don’t get PMT
any more.
