If you were a music lover in 1997, then you know that one of the greatest songs of all time is a little ditty called “Tubthumping” by The Beatles of the 90’s: Chumbawumba. Since it was released nearly 20 years ago, people have been wracking their brains wondering what the back story to such a jam could possibly be. Songs that good don’t just get written out of nowhere!
Well, our prayers have FINALLY been answered! Dunstan Bruce, a founding member of Chumbawumba, has started a Kickstarter to make “I Get Knocked Down (The Untold Story of Chumbawumba)”. Get out your bank cards, folks, because money CAN buy happiness!
For a mere $40,000 USD, you can find out the UNTOLD story of one of the greatest pop groups OF. ALL. TIME. Bruce says of the documentary:
For you, that was probably just a one-hit wonder that you vaguely remember dancing to back in the ’90s but for me that was a very small tip of a very large iceberg.
Bandmate, Jude Abbott, adds:
It’s about the crazy world of celebrity and pop music and the music industry. Because the hit was so big in America and Canada, a lot of people based in the UK aren’t aware of the extent to which it was so huge over there. It’s a story that reaches beyond the specifics of what it’s about.
Well, I don’t know about you guys, but I am SOLD! I will happily donate $5 to get this gripping documentary made. And while we are at it, how do I started a Kickstarter campaign to get a documentary about “Thong Song” made? Or what about “Save Tonight” by Eagle Eye Cherry? There’s definitely a sexy story behind that song! And lest we forget “The Freshman” by The Verve Pipe. WHAT ARE YOU STORIES, ONE HIT WONDERS OF THE 90’S??? I WANT TO KNOW YOU ALL!

“Tubthumping” wasn’t even the best song on the album. That’d have to be “Good Ship Lifestyle”, though “Mary, Mary” was also pretty awesome.
The documentary should actually be pretty interesting. Chumbawamba was like an anarchist commune or something, with more than a dozen people performing in the band. And the album had a lot of controversy because they had a ton of fans, they’d spent like a decade as an independent, underground band and when they signed with EMI and went on an international tour fans felt betrayed.
Can’t wait.
