Digg this!

Imelda_marcosWe’ll happily admit that we didn’t see this one coming.

David Byrne – genius lead singer of Talking Heads and the bloke who did that "Woah I’m wicked and I’m laaaazy" song – has teamed up with Fatboy Slim – baldy DJ, on-the-slide popstar and husband of a ballroom dancer – to write a musical about Imelda Marcos – wife of a reviled dictator, shoe collector and party animal.

Fatboy Slim (CDs) and David Byrne (CDs) joining forces to make a musical about a woman who liked shoes quite a lot seems like quite an unlikely collaboration, but Imelda Marcos is a subject that has long fascinated Byrne, who has often written about her in his online journal.

The musical – Here Lies Love
- is described as "a timeless story with more contemporary resonances
than are comfortable,"
whatever that means. According to the BBC, Here
Lies Love
will focus on the love that Marcos had for music and
nightclubs. It will premiere at the Adelaide Festival in March.

A festival spokesman says of Imelda Marcos:

"She loved the nightlife in all parts of the world, and in New York at
Studio 54, so much so that she installed a disco in her NYC townhouse. It was a non-stop party, featuring politicians, arms dealers, financiers, artists, musicians and the international jet set."

Marcos gained notoriety because of her giant shoe collection – it’s
rumoured that she owned over 3000 pairs – that symbolised the
decadence that she and her husband, Philippine President Ferdinand
Marcos
enjoyed in as their country lived in poverty. Imelda was found guilty of corruption charges in the mid-nineties, but
her convictions were overturned.

Here Lies Love was the concept of David Byrne, who has also written
the music for the production with Fatboy Slim. The set for the musical
is said to be a "multimedia extravaganza," that turns the venue into a
huge nightclub, featuring giant video screens, video screens and an
operating bar.

At least it can’t be as bad as the last Fatboy Slim album.
