These Eurovision betting odds are ticking over at a nice pace, aren’t they? We’re slap-bang in the middle of the B countries already. Another 24 letters and we’re done. Woo!
This year’s Eurovision voting will be slightly different to usual – instead of registering telephone and text votes from each country, Eurovision 2008 will feature electronic polling booths scattered around 10 of the biggest cities in Europe. Now, for the very first time, we’ll get to hear the voices of people who haven’t stayed in to watch Eurovision anyway! Hooray for progress and double hooray for Eurovision!
Here are the Eurovision betting odds for Bosnia and Herzegovina, with help from Paddy Power…
Bosnia and Herzegovina – (pop. 3,922,205; a mountainous country in the western Balkans): Elvir Lakovic Laka, Pokusaj
Bloody hell Bosnia and Herzegovina, what the devil have you done here? Without a trace of exaggeration, Pokusaj might just be the best Eurovision song by any country in five years. It’s incredible – a kind of statacco Tropicalia opening that bursts into a heart-rending chorus that sounds equally like Sigur Ros and a better version of Coldplay and a 20-year-old Japanese videogame and Sabres Of Paradise, with lyrics like “I will try to kiss you and you act stupid/ I will try to wake you up and you pretend to be awake” that are touchingly universal and odd at once. It’s completely different to any of the other Eurovision entries and it’s brilliant. But, and here’s the weird bit, Pokusaj is performed by a man who looks like a stern transvestite and who sings the song to a chicken while the third-place runner-up in a Helena Bonham-Carter From Sweeney Todd lookalike contest runs around willy-nilly in the background. It’ll never happen – as far as Dadaist statements go, the contest have never really advanced beyond Brotherhood Of Man – but we want Elvir Lakovic Laka to win Eurovision more than anything. Current Eurovision betting odds – 20/1
Tomorrow: Bulgaria! But if that’s too long to wait – or you feel like making more money than you know what to do with – head right over to the Paddy Power Eurovision betting odds page to see the latest, and best, betting odds.
