So that’s Dennis Hopper, Gary Coleman, the bloke from Slipknot and Brittany Murphy’s husband dead so far.
Who’s next? Oh, it’s Rue McClanahan from The Golden Girls. And perhaps Rue McClanahan’s death yesterday was the most shocking so far. Not because it happened under mysterious circumstances like Gary Coleman, or because she was a beloved screen icon like Dennis Hopper, or because her death came hot on the heels of the death of her loved one like Brittany Murphy’s husband, or because it came completely out of the blue like the bloke from Slipknot.
No, Rue McClanahan’s death was a shock because – as the star of a TV series about very old women that hasn’t been on television for almost 20 years – we sort of assumed that she was already dead.
Alright, enough’s enough. Can everyone stop dying, please? Just for a couple of weeks, because this is getting stupid. If things carry on at this rate, taking into account the marathon of death that took place almost exactly a year ago, we’ve worked out that by Christmas the most famous person in the world will be Alan Titchmarsh. Alan Titchmarsh, for crying out loud! We don’t know about you, but that’s not a world we particularly want to live in.
And while the death of Rue McClanahan yesterday might not be as much of a jolt as some of the other recent deaths – she was, after all 76 years old – it’s still slightly alarming. The New York Daily News reports:
Actress Rue McClanahan died June 3 of a massive stroke. She was 76… ‘She passed away at 1 a.m.’ at New York Presbyterian Hospital, her manager, Barbara Lawrence, said. McClanahan ‘had her family with her,’ Lawrence added. ‘She went in peace.’

Wow, I used to find hecklerspray really entertaining but lately you guys have just been plain mean. Rue McClanahan was a beloved actress and Blanche Deveraux was a landmark television character.
Maybe you should stick to mocking Kardashians (which was also not done in a particularly artful manner today).
Bonnie says
You are going to mention Paul Gray (bassist of Slipknot) but not Ronnie James Dio? WOW. Also, Lena Horne passed away.
Dee-da says
Get a life Katherine, its called having a sense of humour
Katherine says
Having a sense of humor is moot when something is just not funny.
Blanche says
How dare you to talk like that about Rue?! She was a wonderful actress, she was on the stars of the Golden Girls. FYI: they all were just in their 40s when Golden Girls were filmed. The author sounds like an amature teenager. I hope one day you will learn to respect the old; and I also hope that nobody will say anything so unsensative about you when you die.
Dustie says
I agree it is good to have a sense of humor, however the comments regarding Rue are just plain RUDE. Think of her family and how would you like to have your death published and someone be as tasteless as you have been?
Richard Satchell says
Didn’t you see Rue in the series Sordid Lifes? She was so good. What rock have you been living under? She will be greatly missed
Shelly says
I agree Katherine with all the comments you left. Rue will be missed! By the way….I wouldn’t worry about the comment left by…”Dee-duh” Clearly this person is either has wacked sense of humor, went off the meds or is just jealous that when their time comes no one will write anything.
