Another day, another band as big as The Beatles (CDs). Kind of…
The American Billboard singles chart is now is such a state of disrepair that if hecklerspray recorded the noise of a goat in a raincoat on the end of a jetty at midnight being mocked by a group of farting butlers, we’d be bigger than The Beatles too.
The problem is this: less and less Americans are buying singles. If they want a song, they’ll download it, or tape it off the radio, or pay a tiny barbershop quartet to sinisterly whisper it to them in their sleep.
This is why 50 Cent (CDs) was lauded as the supposed successor to the Fab Four a few weeks ago. He had the same number of songs in the top ten as the Beatles did, once.
And this is why Coldplay (CDs) are this week’s new Beatles. Why? Their new song Speed Of Sound is at number eight in the American charts.
That’s right. Number eight. Not number one, not even top five. Way to go, lads! But the sad truth is that the last British song that did this well in it’s first week was Hey Jude.
Since 1968 though, singles sales have shrunk like steroid-injected testicles. And this means that it’s getting easier and easier to do as well as The Beatles. Even if you’re a bunch of pansies with filmstar wives singing a song that’s almost identical to Clocks.

I just listened to the new Coldplay song, and I have to agree. It’s way too similar to Clocks to have been released as the first single. They should’ve used better judgement in picking a song to whet everybody’s appetite for the forthcoming album. I hope Gwyneth hasn’t completely emasculated her beau.

You can’t beat the guitar sound on Shiver. Back to square one…

Man you guys are sooo wrong.
If coldplay is just a “bunch of pansies” we’ll see who will take NUMBER ONE in album sales during the week of June 6th. I’ll be back to this post during that week to rub it all in your faces.
…more and more people are developing a surplus amount of grotesque taste in music.

Being hippies isn’t going stop the album from going to number one, but a number one won’t make them any less flowery. Peace and love brothers.
