Just when we thought we’d seen the last of the stubbly-headed Fresh Prince prot?g?, Willow Smith comes out with a fresh new earworm ready to ruthlessly burrow it’s way in to our brains.?
Just when we’d managed to get ‘Whip My Hair’ out of our heads, too. If there’s anything more uncomfortable than listening to a 12 year old sing about her ‘Summer Fling’, then it’s a forced and completely out-of-place British accent. Poor Willow – imagine having your awkward 12-year old self and all it’s bad decisions being broadcast to the masses.
The song itself wouldn’t be terrible if it were being sang by someone else – let’s say Rihanna, seeing as the entire video looks like it was made to be a kid-friendly version of the ‘We Found Love’ video, complete with ?the star ?jumping up and down in a field whilst draped in some form of American flag.
They lyrics leave something to be desired when they’re coming out the mouth of somebody who’s probably still in a training bra. Case in point:
“You tell me that I’m the one / I tell you it’s just for fun…It’s just a couple months but we do it anyway”
She also talks about walking on the beach at midnight and good night kisses ‘if the mood’s right’. Which it won’t be until you’re at least sixteen.
The video opens a whole other can of worms. The godawful wig is one thing – she’s known for crazy hair, and in all honestly, most of us would have similarly awful hair at that age if our parents had let us. But why the accent? Is she going all Nicki Minaj and adopting an alter-ego? Just once I’d like to hear a non-Brit put on an English accent and have it not be from London. This video would have been so much better if she’d have thanked her imaginary boyfriend for their summer fling with a strong Bristolian accent.
Her friends also seem to a good deal older than her, judging by the fact they have breasts and tattoos. It’s a little sad to imagine how embarrassed ?Willow is going to be by this when she’s in her twenties – and she will be embarrassed, it doesn’t matter how much money you’ve got in the bank, everybody is humiliated by what they did when they were in middle school.
Although Willow can probably find solace in the huge pile of cash she’ll be swimming in.
Sixela Harpy says
By the time she’s in her twenties she’ll be following in the footsteps of Miley, Lindsay & Amanda.
