So that’s it. No more American Idol for another year. Last night Adam Lambert and Kris Allen sang their final songs, so it’s over.
No, hang on, wait – there’s still tonight’s American Idol final results show to go. But, hey, that shouldn’t take too long, should it? Hello, here’s the winner, goodbye. Probably three, three and a half minutes, tops.
What? Two hours? Two full hours, plus the inevitable 30 minutes of unplanned overtime because Paula Abdul will get overexcited while answering a question and start speaking in whalesong for no good reason whatsoever? Thanks, American Idol. You’re spoiling us. Really.
Judging by some of the comments we’ve received this week, this could be one of the most divisive American Idol finals in history. In one corner is Adam Lambert, the show’s break-out star. And in the other is Kris Allen, the amiable dark horse who’s probably only in the American Idol final because people couldn’t bear to see Danny Gokey get any more attention.
Because of this, whoever wins American Idol tonight will blunder into a massive shitstorm. If Kris Allen wins, some will claim it’d be down to bigots working the anti-gay vote. And if Adam Lambert wins, some will threaten to boycott the show because it’s become too camp – which is really saying something for a ballad-heavy singing competition hosted by Ryan Seacrest and judged by Simon Cowell.
But that’ll play out in the days and weeks to come. At least we can all be united on one front – regardless of whether Kris Allen or Adam Lambert sings American Idol, the song that the winner will have to release as a first single is horrible.
No Boundaries, it’s called. It’s all mountains and roads and hapless sincerity. It’s sounds like a bloody Gillette advert. From 1986. Honestly, No Boundaries is so terrible that neither contestant got it right – Kris Allen’s version was off-key and insipid and Adam Lambert’s version was like Meat Loaf karaoke performed by a man with a face like a crying baby.
This is how bad No Boundaries was – American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi said that she didn’t want anyone to be judged by it. And she wrote the bloody thing. What hope do the rest of us have?
If you want to hear No Boundaries for yourself, then we’d suggest tuning into the final American Idol results show tonight where, in a gormless attempt to shift copies, it’ll no doubt be performed twice each by Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, then again by one of the guest stars, then again by a choir of war-scarred orphans standing on a canyon at sunset in front of a firework display made to look like a unicorn hugging a dolphin.
So, who do we think will win American Idol tonight? We’re going to go out on a limb here and say us. Because after tonight we won’t have to write about American Idol again for months. And in many ways, that’s the greatest prize of all.

Why must Adam Lambert stick his tongue out when he sings?
Someone please tell me why..
nitro says
Sticking his toungue out is actually a vocal technique that enables you to go high. It’s difficult. People who achieved this technique must have trained themselves very hard
Katy says
For the same reason kris allen sings sideways when he’s making another weak attempt at power-singing…I mean seriously ridiculous, who cares?? Adam is in a vocal master-class while Kris Allen is the typical corn-fed cookie cutter cute boy American Idol. Yawwwn. He’ll probably win though – after all it was the popular vote that put Bush in power for two consecutive terms. American voters have NO objectivity. They have to get it wrong before getting it right. The world is laughing.
Suzanne says
Katy, this comment was just too funny. You are most likely correct. Chris will most likely win this competition. Not because he is deserving, however. He will probably win because America may not be ready for an artist who is simply not afraid to be who he is. America will most likely conform to what they “expect” a pop star to be, and Chris certainly has the “look” that mainstream America seems to seek when it comes to choosing a pop star. But I agree with an article I read this week. This is a chance for America to choose the artist, rather than simply choosing a performer. Adam is a powerhouse of an artist, and at this point in the game, whether he wins or not, I think if he plays his cards right, he can write his own ticket.

Wow, what would entertainment bloggers do with themselves if they couldn’t snark? It’s like a pandemic of snarkusitis has taken over the blogosphere and killed all the respect. Constructive criticism is one thing, but all the snarking is starting to be annoying. Are entertainment bloggers paid by the snark? To snark or not to snark, be different and pick the latter already!

I had the same “blah” feelings about Kris as well until the last two episodes of A.I. Technically Adam has the upper hand, but he’s a bit Drag Queenish to me, just enought to sometimes turn me off to his singing. When I hear him sing and can’t see the T.V. I keep thinking that Tina Turner is on stage.
Not trying to sound corny but, they are both winners. I can say though that I believe Kris would record more music that I would care to listen to then Adam. Adam seems more cut out for theatrical roles, IMO.
Good luck Gentlemen!

Why must people judge the true ability of people by their looks?
Adam is truly professional. I have listened to all of the replays of all of his performances on Idol and have not found one flaw with any! I am not a teenager but over 60! Last nights performances were ok, not my favorite and the MAD WORLD performance was not as good as the first time he sang it. That is my opinion. Don’t really care if he is gay, straight, black, white, short, tall, Christian or Jewish because the man can sing! When you listen to him on the radio you can not see his face so think about that! People voted for Taylor Hicks and well, where has he gone with his VOTED so called talents? He sucks. Chris Daughtry was better. For Kris and Danny, they seem like really sweet people. The kind of people you would want as neighbors or friends. BUT, Danny, UNFORTUNATELY was voted off and I felt he could out sing Kris.
Voters felt differently maybe for the wrong reasons…LOOKS! Kris had a, not so good performance last night, weak, and maybe he should just sing and forget hiding behind the multi talent of the piano and the guitar. Last night he was off key on Kara’s song and just can’t sing the way Adam can. Both guys are great, nice smiles, nice looking families, very sweet and humble but I have never seen IDOL pick the RIGHT person as the winner. Excuse me, voters pick the right person. Usually they were runners up! Hope it changes this year. Yes, the person that wrote in before me said America voted for Bush twice (not me!!!!!! he was a moran and still is), so where are peoples heads? WHY did this happen? Maybe as one person told me that Bush was nicer looking than Gore and Kerry? Well, look at the MESS we are in now! As we voted in Obama, hopefully he can clean up this MESS Bush left, and maybe people will place aside looks to vote for Adam. No, I am not pro gay, don’t like the eyeliner and nailpolish deal but you won’t see that when you listen to Adam on the radio! Elton John dresses weird and he has so much talent. Also Freddy Mercury and other gay/feminine actors and singers. Regardless, Adam will go far if he plays his cards right and doesn’t give up. By the way, why is Kris in this running up and he can’t compare to Alison! She was excellent singingthe last few songs she performed. Let’s hope for once Idol has it right and the person with the most talent and singing ability, ADAM, WINS!
Marilyn Skaff says
I wholeheartedly agree. Kris was pale in comparison to ADAM. Kris belongs in a coffeehouse, Adam belongs on the music charts and anywhere else his powerful and beautiful voice takes him. ADAM won in a walk last night. The judges were way too lenient in their criticisms – because they knew Kris was battered vocally by ADAM. If ADAM doesn’t win–and all polls are pointing to him taking it all– that would be a tragedy in one respect, but then he can pretty much write his own future – and I want to be there when it happens!
Niko Belic says
it’s all about personal taste, Beth. It’s is illogical to expect voters to be objective about something as subjective as personal taste in music. Best ability does not always determine who will be the brightest star. As a musician of 25 years myself, I have seen and heard jazz musicians that are, in every way measureable, superior to the bubblegum radio rock groups that are topping the charts. But since the radio bands are making music that the CD buying, concert going crowd wants to hear they dwarf the truly master musicians in record sales and popularity. There is no consistant formula for gauranteed success in music. Being a good musician/singer technically is important, but there’s a lot of luck involved of hitting the right sound that the public is going to latch onto.
And music has gone far beyond just radio these days. that’s just the way it is. ;)
April says
No offense, but as a well trained singer watching the show last night Kris was not the one who sang pitchy. Whoever thinks that obviously was not paying attention. Adams last song was horribly pitchy. The judges knew it too! Randy was the only one who spoke the truth when he said that it was way pitchy in spots. The other judges didn’t want to say what they thought because they did not want to talk down Adam. I am not saying Adam is not talented or meaning to sound like I am bashing him becuase I am not. He is a very talented singer and performer. He can sing the phonebook just like the judges always say but in my opinion he was out sung last night. Good luck to both contestants. I can’t imagine the nerves that you are having to overcome these past 2 days! I wish the best to both, and just think the show is over now, and the fun starts! God Bless
Kerri says
For what it’s worth, in my humble opinion, here’s my prediction.
In three years, whether Kris wins or not, he’ll be another AI contestant has been. For me, he has a good voice most of the time, but his songs are too similar and I would never buy one of his CDs. The last song of the finale shows he can sing with a piano or a guitar helping him, but his raw voice just isn’t that good.
In three year, whether Adam wins or not, he’ll be an international superstar. He has the best stage presence, the best vocal range and knows how to perform for an audience. Besides his wonderful voice one of the things that impressed me most was how he gave recognition to the musicians after almost all of his performances. He has class!!
Niko Belic says
Exactly… it was not a complete sweep for Adam. Adam is wicked in terms of range, no doubt. But range isn’t everything when it comes to putting out popular music.
Freda says
Excuse me have you ever heard of Ozzie Osboune, not afraid to be himself. Anyways Adam is great and if he does not win it will be to his benefit as he will not owe Idol any of his money that he makes the wineer owes Idol money.

Indeed, most american(s) today mind set of voting is dispecable don’t know how to vote at all. I beleive that when it come’s in voting America should have a sort of UNIVERSITY VOTING SCHOOL, because they mostly judge it by how they look. Both of them are cute
because they are still in their youth but again american(s) should
stop and think twice before spreading or make a vote without any
value and purpose at all. Agreed with you in regards the President of the United State today, it was chosen by all ignorant american(s)
by the look and trying to be as cute as possible during the campaining at that time, so at this time Obama mania is undergo or perhaps overwent to somewhere of nowhere what to do, and to go.
Lets hope that all american(s) voter for idol or constitution, they should vote for the person whom is morethan qualify and able to rock the stage for the purpose of the music industry. Kodos to Adam Lambert, and not to dissapoint tonight verdict from all american(s)
that disvalue their judgementto the person is deserving to be
THE REAL ROCK STAR OF ALL AMERICAN IDOL HISTORY. Humbleness of being cute has nothing to do with this competation, this is about the true character of whomever is able to ROCK THE STAGE DURING CONCERT.
All american(s) must correct the error in voting the wrong person
its about time to correct the error then and now.
Nolan says
Although Mad World was good it wasn’t near as powerful as what Adam did it a few weeks back. I have to agree that Kris did win that round but in an overall comparison they aren’t in the same league. Adam could compete vocally and probably beats guys like Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, etc, in their prime. In my opinion he may be one of the best vocal talents ever.
I was really hoping Adam would sing Bohemian Rhapsody on one of the shows as that would of really shown off his incredible vocal range. Other songs I was dying to here him sing were Creep (Radiohead), Dream On (Areosmith), or Stairway to Heaven (Zeppelin) because they are all rock classics that Lambert would put his spin on and possible make then sound better then the originals.

I personally think Adam will win, although like people said, his preformance wasnt great, but alot better than Kris.

It is obvious that Adam is the true winner of this competition, there is no one else on his level. If by chance Chris does win it would really be a disappointment, kind of like Gilles losing Dancing With The Stars. What a complete a total scam! Oy!

ha ha ha, Adam “with a face like a crying baby”…. I hate that face. That’s why I’m for Kris all the way.

Gokey, in my opinion was the better vocalist. I admit that the first time I saw Adam punch out that upper whateveritscalled note, I was amazed. However, since then, he’s arranging all songs to fit that one make-my-ears-bleed note. Quite frankly, I can’t take it any longer. I am on suicide watch once his album comes out. I fear there will be no way to avoid that thirteen year old screem that will no doubt polute the airwaves.
Please, oh, please. Let Kris secure the voting…i’m begging for all the dogs on the planet.

well..idc about his looks..i care about his signing..his signing is really..really, good. I was amazed by the range of Adam, but his overly theatrical delivery leaves me a bit cold. I was not particularly amazed by Kris’ range or singing prowess, but his interpetations seemed, and felt more genuine. It really does boil down to what you like personally.
I saw the showdown last night sort of as, Geoff Tate Vs Ed Kowalscyk.
I enjoyed them both, for entirely different reasons. Adam will have a huge career on Broadway. There are alot of Kris’s, already making records, his fate is more uncertain.

First we start with Adam, he would only be good for the Rocky H Show or a rock event. Now Kris has class, Christian values, sexy mouth action. A cool family. His parents have a great son and to put the topping on everything he has a uncle whom is a pastor. I just read that Trey Noran the pastor has many star friends and is soon doing a gospel duet with Cee Winans, and Beyonce. How do you top a class act like this family!!! Joyce and Kevin Bacon

Hi! I’m a working mother and a devout Christian, too. I recognize that American Idol is a singing talent contest open to all — black or white, female, male and otherwise, Christian or not — and that it is not supposed to be a popularity contest for a certain class of persons. Among all of Season 8’s contenders, Adam Lambert is clearly the artist and the best singer, gifted with a powerful voice. America’s vote for Kris Allen, or its vote against Adam, seems to be a vengeful hate vote against the America that Adam stands for. ADAM LAMBERT DESERVED TO WIN. Even Kris Allen himself knows this in his Christian heart: that is why, as soon as he was unexpectedly handed the undeserved crown, he so sincerely declared in public — to adhere faithfully to truth and repudiate irrational vote results that were surely no act of God. Adam Lambert is the true winner!
Jo says
A. Lambe
You just did exactly what was said would be done. Just because Adam didn’t win you are making the excuse that its because its now become a gay bashing vote. Thats not it at all… I agree with Niko, its what kind of music people want to hear on the radio and what they’ll buy. I would listen to and buy Kris’ music before Adams because it’s just my kind of music. Also, I hoped Danny would win, and why didn’t he? Danny was never in the bottom three and then poof he was voted off? Crazy… But you have to realize this… Danny and Kris as far as type of music was a lot alike… Adams music is way different than the two. So when Danny got booted his fans had to go somewhere.. Did you really think they would go for Adam when their music style is so different.. Heck no! I do think Adam has mad vocal talents also and yes he has great stage presence.. but I just like Danny and Kris music better.

The wasted effort put into American Idol and other nonsense such as survivors indicate thsat we as a nation are falling behind. These programs along with 95% of he junk on TV means nothing in the world of problems facing the USA. We need to get serious about what the nation should be focused on.

I’m so sick and tired of the very annoying attention the media is giving Adam. Yah, he can sing and all but apparently, a lot of folks do not like his screeching style. And just look at the current news about AI, the writers usually put their focus on Adam and it’s getting really annoying. Look at this article, why use Adam’s pic only?
Ad says
I love Kris Allen!
Okay… all of us know that Kris Allen won. It doesn’t matter if Adam Lambert didn’t win because he’s still going to be a great musician in the music industry because he knows how to dress up, sing and stuff but that’s not the point. I personally think Adam’s song choices were boring( and he screamed in some of the songs) About the margin thing, I do not think that they failed to reveal it because Adam actually won… Maybe because the margin is too far. So, because of it, they do not want to embarass Adam( My opinion) . Of course lots of people like Adam… but United States of America is big. Tell me, how many people viewed and voted for contestants of American Idol Season 8? Maybe Kris Allen’s fans voted on the finale more than they voted on the usual episodes. Maybe a part of Kris Allen’s fans had made their choices just to vote on the finale and never voted on the previous episodes? Well, who knows? People have been ‘hoo-ha’ about Adam but so what? It doesn’t mean that he was suppose to win and it’s all about psychology. The judges praised Adam Lambert almost all the time and this affects the viewers and the voters. In some of the websites that I viewed, some people voted Kris Allen because they do not like Adam Lambert being homosexual. I disagree. It does not matter if he’s gay or not. What’s important is his talent but I still think that Kris Allen really won…. not because of Adam’s homosexual thing or whatsoever. YES Adam Lambert has a great voice but so does KRIS! To those who thinks that Kris Allen shouldnt have won American Idol, think again. He’s a great singer and he plays a lot of music instruments. Besides, he’s good at choosing songs. Does he not amaze you? If you still disagree… it’s okay . Kris Allen is TYPICAL but everyone likes typical right? no?. Tell me, would you prefer listening to an artist who plays easy-going songs or an artist who screams a lot? Well that’s gotta be your choice. Believe me, both of them are going to be successful in the music industry. Actually, they already did.
ps: Ignore my grammatical error.

I found the vocals all sounded pretty bad on American Idol, but not because of the artists (they have awesome voices), it was the sound man that made it sound horrible and that large room echoes as it plays out on national Television. The screaming sounds were worse on TV because the microphone had too much treble on it, instead of more bass and reverb. If you listen to the studio recordings you will hear a significant difference.
This is why so many singers sound great on CD but horrible in concert.
If you listen to the “studio” version of Adam Lambert’s songs (got them posted on my site he he he) you will hear how LOVELY it sounds thanks to the digital age. It actually gives you goose bumps and makes your body vibrate (compliments of itech headphones). However, no binaural beats (love those) but pretty close.
Both Adam Lambert and Kris Allen have wonderful voices, but the star is Adam Lambert, he’s in all the magazines and Hollywood’s crazy about him. He is a pretty positive guy and shares his message that it’s “okay to be different.”
The kid has got thick skin and he will accomplish anything he sets his hearts on. So will Kris Allen, because he tried to have a music career a few years ago and it flopped. Now he has executive producers who will promote him up to stardom but in a quieter way. The great thing is watching Kris Allen come out of his shell, he’s not as shy anymore on camera.
Adam Lambert reached his goal and I quote, “to stay on the show till the end. It wasn’t about winning, it was about proving to myself that I could be different and still make it to the end, period.”
Two dreamers who share a destiny, and no matter what we say, if they believe in themselves nothing will stop them from becoming what destiny has planned for them.
