Over the weekend, excerpts from the new Bridget Jones book “Mad About The Boy” were published in the Sunday Times. The book is out on October 10th.
Bridget is now a 51-year old widow and a single mum to two kids – Mabel and Billy. She is also dating a toyboy, dabbling with the social media and writing a screenplay. Daniel Cleaver is a godfather to her kids (yes, you read that right. And no, we don’t know what Bridget was thinking either). So yes, Helen Fielding only killed off Mark Darcy.*
But… Mark Darcy was an integral part of the books. We get it, kill your darlings and all that, but what the what?
Also does this now mean no Colin Firth in the next movie (and you know there will be another movie)? We don’t see how it would be feasible unless it is a Lost flashback type of situation.
Helen Fielding is a good writer. Funny and smart and snarky at times. Obviously, she is not afraid to go to some dark places. And yes, life can be shitty and happy endings are rare. To that we say:
But Ms Fielding, we kinda knew that already. You didn’t really need to kill Mark Darcy to teach us that particular lesson.
But most of all – we loathe how she managed to turn us into a member of the pearl clutching brigade. For the record – we don’t own any pearls (freshwater or otherwise), so it gives you an idea how outraged we were.
* The irony of using a Dean Winchester gif in a post about Bridget Jones does not escape us. To that we say – teehee!
