So Boy George didn’t end up on Celebrity Big Brother like everyone thought. But he’s going to give us the next best thing – a fight in a Manhattan court over his drugs charges. A fight to the death!
Well, maybe not to the death, but a fight nonetheless. Boy George appeared in court yesterday to ask for more time to prepare his case to defend himself against charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance, after police found 13 bags of cocaine in his apartment in October. And, goddammit, Boy George says he’s bloody well innocent.
As much as he says that he’ll fight the drugs possession charges
against him, Boy George (CDs) doesn’t really seem like he’s in that much of a
rush. We all know the story of how Boy George was arrested by now – on
October 7 Boy George telephoned the police to report a burglary, only
for the police to find 13 bags of cocaine in his apartment. If he’s
found guilty of criminal possession of a controlled substance, Boy
George could face up to 15 years in prison.
The court case was scheduled to take place shortly before Christmas, but Boy George and his lawyer managed to get the trial held up
until February 1, as the singer had "literary and recording projects"
to fulfil. At the time, we all got excited because we thought that
meant Boy George was going to be on Celebrity Big Brother, but we were
wrong. Pete Burns – everyone’s favourite Boy George stand-in
– went on the show instead.
As the more eagle-eyed of you will have noticed, yesterday was
February 1 – the date in which Boy George was due to return to court to
fight his drugs rap. Only, that isn’t really what happened – instead,
Boy George turned up, asked for another adjournment until March to
further prepare his case, left the court, hugged two girls and left,
leaving his lawyer Lou Freeman to explain things to the press:
"In the strongest possible terms, George maintains his innocence. He’s going to fight them all
the way."
Freeman also claimed that Boy George doesn’t know why the drugs were in his apartment, or who they belonged to.
Still, at least now Boy George has until March 8 to find a lovely
hat to wear to court, and it gives him lots of time to colour the
bottom of his jaw in black to make him look thinner. And maybe listen to some of that awful techno music that he seems to still enjoy listening to.
