Woody Allen has made some terrible, terrible films. But as soon as he decides to skip off to another country to make a movie, everyone decides that they actually liked Woody Allen all along.
Since the London-filmed Match Point has got all kinds of people frothing relentlessly about what a genius Woody Allen is again – even though it looks to us like an overlong, humourless episode of a rubbish 1980’s BBC drama, the director has decided to try and make another film in a new country – this time Spain.
Going abroad has done wonders for Woody Allen (DVDs). Match Point is being
heralded as a stunning return-to-form after making a string of stinkers
like Melinda And Melinda and The Curse Of The Jade Scorpion. Woody has
claimed that he came to London because it was easier for him to get
financial backing for his films, but we suspect he simply guessed that
Americans would love Match Point because it’s all British and
sophisticated, and British people would love it because it was filmed
in London – which meant we can all crow about how brilliant London is even more than usual.
Either way, it seems to be working – Match Point has been nominated
for all kinds of Golden Globes, including Best Drama, Best Supporting
Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Scenes Of People
Having Meaningful Arguments In Front Of Blindingly Obvious London Tourist Landmarks. And
now Woody Allen is going to try and replicate his success by making a
film in Spain. According to Reuters:
Allen will write and direct the English-language script for
Barcelona-based production house Mediapro, using international and
Spanish actors. No other details were immediately available.
In a statement released by Mediapro, Woody Allen said:
"I’m happy to be able to work with Mediapro and make a film in Spain. I hope that I’ll be
able to enjoy my stay in Spain, a country that has become very special
to me."
