Reese Witherspoon is a famous actress, most notably for playing Greta Wolfcastle in The Simpsons. Oh hang on. No. She’s famous for playing playing June Carter in Johnny Cash flick, Walk the Line. Very good she was too. Now, she’s going to be singing again.
This time, Witherspoon will play the lead role in a biopic about late jazz star Peggy Lee. That’s nice isn’t it?
So what do you know about Peggy Lee?
Witherspoon, of course, won an Oscar for playing June Carter in Walk The Line, so there’s a good chance she might do a good job in re-enacting Peggy’s life… though, that said, the timing of Walk the Line was rather fortuitous as Cash’s body was barely cold.
Peggy Lee, if you didn’t know, did the most famous version of ‘Fever’ but also gave her voice to other projects, such as Disney’s 1955 animated film Lady And The Tramp she did the speaking and singing voices for multiple characters in Disney’s Lady and the Tramp movie (playing Darling, the dog Peg and the two Siamese cats Si and Am).
That said, that didn’t end well. Peggy sued Disney in the ’90s for royalties on Lady and the Tramp, bagging a load of royalties from home tapes which wouldn’t have been included in her contract with Disney as they didn’t exist when she agreed to write and perform for Walt & Co.
So, fighter for musician’s rights and married four times (each marriage ending in divorce), Witherspoon is playing another feisty woman. Could be a good film, but unlikely to be as big as Walk the Line, sadly.
