Listening to Radio 2 is a lot like playing Russian Roulette; as good as it is, you know – you just know – that sooner or later Katie Melua (CDs) is going to crop up and bland her way through some turgid cock of a song. And it spoils your day so much that not even playing Lego Star Wars (Games) can cheer you up.
And yet Radio 2 was still named UK Station Of The Year at the Sony Radio Awards. The judges must have chosen them using the same techniques as everyone did in the election – don’t vote for the best, vote for the least rubbish.
Luckily, Michael Parkinson didn’t win anything. Listening to his
radio show is like being trapped in a shed with a grumpy old man
determined to turn you comatose with a mixture of jazz and complaining,
so he can have his wicked wicked way with you.
Sadly, no awards for Terry ‘King of the Universe’ Wogan, either. He
is cool because he always sounds like he’s been at the gin a bit and he
plays the Beach Boys (CDs) every day.
Grabbing the awards for Music Broadcaster and Specialist Music was
Radio 1’s Zane Lowe. Quite how he managed this is beyond us. Listening
to his smug, posturing, "I know more about music than you, so shut up"
voice droning on about bands that only 14 year-olds like is roughly the
same as watching a 400 hour-long documentary about child prostitute
drug-addicts in Bulgaria.
Christian O’Connell did the best for awards, taking home the Best
Breakfast Show award, as well as the Entertainment and Competition
awards. Can’t really argue with that.
There were more than 30 awards given out last night, and it’d be much easier if you all just took a look at the full list here.
Who would you have liked to see win a Sony Radio award? Basically, who deserves one more than Zane Lowe? Let us know below.
