Muse confuse us in the same way that as when we're left puzzled by a surprise solid chocolate Twix instead of biscuit and caramel one. It's not like they've released nothing but bad music, just the majority of it is rubbish.
At best, we rate them as some sort of Radiohead tribute band who one day decided to break out and perform their own material.
The band are like the new kid at school who nobody knows about. Always hanging around in the background, they don't really annoy anyone, but no-one knows anything about them. All they seem to do is constantly record albums, release singles and tour. Only recently has some personality been injected in to them, making the average person think they do more than write and record.
Frontman Matt Bellamy has recently gone and found himself all loved up with Hollywood actress Kate Hudson. Now he's going to write lyrics about his experiences with her. Pass us the sick bag would you?
Society often rejects stuff if it isn’t populist. This is why, on a Saturday night, X-Factor is on the TV because everyone prefers second rate singers who think they can belt out hits. You?ll never see a program dedicated to pirates and ninjas doing battle on a hilltop.
More and more people sing about fluffy feelings like love and what sandwich filling was left in the shop at 3pm which makes things a bit boring.
Subsequently, everything becomes bland; self implodes and disappears for bloody ages. With any luck.
We predict the same for Muse as The Sun report Matt Bellamy as saying:
?I’ve been through a lot of personal changes, so some of the songwriting might be a bit more open and personal.”
Let's hope they know the chords for Fake Plastic Trees when the next album goes tits up.

finally someone who realizes the same things i’ve been saying about muse FOR YEARS. so many people have hard on’s for these jokers because they added some lasers to their tour…..
wendy says
So, are you arguing that rock and roll stars are required to write only songs that blow you away? It’s music, get a grip. It’s not as if he’s a congressman making laws that affect your life. This “journalism” is pure extreme opinionism. This type of writing is only available via the internet because it is so easy to make a webpage. I can just imagine you and your sarcastic whiny little aren’t-i-a-cool-all-emo-n-shit attitude as you wrote this. I’ll bet the people who used to have to listen to your pointless rants are glad you have another outlet.
Randy says
You’re joking, right? If not, you, my friend, are utterly clueless. “We rate them as some sort of Radiohead tribute band”? Who is we, anyway. Certainly not me and the millions of fans all over the world. And for the record, the Radiohead comparisons ended years ago, and they never had any validity to begin with.
Yes, obviously, I am a Muse fan. But, more relevantly, I am a breathing human being who has a moderate pulse on the music scene and, therefore, knows that Muse is far more than “the new kid at school who nobody knows about….” Are you not aware that Muse has been around for 16 years. I say they have earned a little respect for that, at least. And practically everyone on the planet now knows who Muse is, even if they aren’t all fans.
Also, what the heck do you mean by “All they seem to do is constantly record albums, release singles and tour.” What on earth is a band supposed to do? Isn’t that was U2, The Stones, and every artist who wants success does? Do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds. That’s like saying, “all Stephen King does is write books and short stories.” It’s what he _does_, so, of course, that’s what he, well, does.
Finally, I want to know if you have ever actually seen Muse live. It is a well known (and documented) fact that Muse is considered by many to be the best live act on the planet. I share that belief, because I have seen them (and hundreds of others) live.
I could go on and on, my friend. Like do you not know that most songs are inspired from the actuall experiences of those who wrote them. Some songs are crap, yes, but some, as in Muse’s, are sincere, intense, meaniful, and simply well-written…nevermind the fact that they are backed by some of the most powerful and creative riffs arounds.
Matias says
….I’m not sure what the Hell this guy was thinking when he wrote this, but, how Can he say that most of Muse’s Music is Rubbish? Muse is an Amazingly talented band, and yeah, they may not be that well known in the us, But they are Worldwide famoud Muscicians….
ravenfan says
you dont know what your talking about, they are a genious group and are doing more to benifit this world than that of someone who just hates on another person. show some respect you dip and dont type up articles when your girlfriend just broke up with you or something…
i like them over radiohead anyway
Tim Lane says
To be fair Matthew, I can understand your viewpoint. You think Muse aren’t particularly good. Many people have that opinion, even my parents.
However, to make a wild accusation that the next Muse album will be ‘crap’ is, to be fair, shocking. No-one, I repeat, no-one can create such noises and sounds like the Teignmouth Trio. Hell, its not your style, but is sure as hell mine!
Futhermore, I think you haven’t sampled Muse’s true music. Stuff they have released has been a little dodgy I admit, for instance ‘Neutron Star Collision’ and possibly ‘United States of Eurasia’, and I think your viewpoint may be coming from that. If not, well, I guess I’m wrong! However if this is the case, you need to sample a couple of tracks which I think are just incredible – ‘MK ultra’ and ‘Bliss’.
As any Muse fan would know, these tracks represents Muse at their finest. If you don’t like these, you don’t like Muse, I can’t help that. But do not underestimate these musicians – as shown live, they always have an ace up their sleeve.

Be fair, “Showbiz” was a modern classic and will always be a shining example of some of the finest rock of the era. Alas, after a mindblowing debut comes the inevitable disappointment of a decline into mediocrity, unsurprisingly fuelled by their breakthrough into the mainstream. I hate to say it but your prognosis is likely to be depressingly accurate.
Neil Sherwin says
Oh look, another lazy author comparing Muse to Radiohead. Newsflash – it’s not 1999, come up with your own material.
As for “All they seem to do is constantly record albums, release singles and tour.”, what else should a band be doing?

You are so stupid because still compare Muse to Radiohead, they are very different now, you are crap, haters? FUCK OFF & STFU!!!

Are you jealous? You are poor radiohead fan, you are twat just like thome yorke LOL
Mithaearon says
Muse fans make me laugh, and are far more entertaining than the dull radiohead (another dull band) wannbies of the actual band itself.
Thank you deluded Muse fans for bringing a smile to my face.
Randy says
You are quite welcome. But by “smile” I’m sure you mean “smirk.” And that’s okay, too.
Anna says
One knows to just laugh at a blog written based on an “article” in The Sun. One of the first things you should know about Muse is what they say and what they actually do are two different things. Changes in his personal life could indeed refer to KH just as it might refer to his the rams getting loose on his 50 Dorset sheep.
Amber says
They went from aping Radiohead to aping Queen. Not good =-/
Um, No! says
Showbiz a modern classic? How? It’s like a wannabe Bends (along with Coldplay’s Parachutes).
Kris Silver says
I have, twice.
They were underwhelming at best, twice.
Edward says
This post is riduculous, Muse is popular, it they weren’t popular they wouldn’t spend loads of money in tours and all the things they do, youtube any muse songs live and see how crowded their concerts get, go outside and ask 10 people who’s muse then you will shut up, don’t speak for everyone and the fact that you compare them to radiohead just shows how poor your sources are and that you just talk shit and know absolutely nothing about the band and that obviously YOU are not into it, so don’t even say WE. Personal opinion taken but don’t include US in whatever you think.
Randy says
Are you sure it was Muse you went to see? Even non-fans I know who have seen them were impressed with their live performance. If it was Muse, and it was a recent tour you saw (though it doesn’t need to be), then I’m surprised you (or anyone) could be underwhelmed. Taste is relative, I know, but still…..
Randy says
Parachutes came out after Showbiz. And the Radiohead argument is silly…it always has been. And I’m not just saying that because I’m a muse fan. Apart from the occasional vocal falsetto similarity, these bands are quite different.
shit says

I’ve always liked Muse very much and have been following them ever since their jaw-droppingly good debut in ’99. I was lucky enough to see them at the Eden Project which is probably the single most awesome venue in the world, in its own special way. It was good show and I had a fine time, but… best live act on the planet? Sorry, not by a long shot. They played their music, they played it well, but there was nothing particularly stand-out about the show. They were energetic and engaging but I can’t say I was amazed – maybe I was expecting too much. Let’s put it this way, it didn’t hold a candle to the Lupen Crook gig I just saw in a 120 capacity pub down the road (music fans, look him up).
Tom J says
I’m with you on this one, I’ve just never really got the comparison to Radiohead.

rob man says
Radiohead sounds nothing like muse. I like both bands and can’t compare them, i mean yes they both have a similar style, but radiohead songs are more slower and use a wide variety of different sounds in their music. Muse uses alot of different instruments and uses creative effects while having a very upbeat style to most of their songs. Calling muse a rip off of radiohead, is like saying aerosmith was a rip off of the beatles it doesn’t make any sense.
rob man says
Queen? what? i’m confused, how do they sound like queen? What song? can someone explain? TOO MUCH PROPAGANDA NO FACTS!!!!
reeves says
Ur and idiot
the only people that are going to be reading an article about muse are muse fans
so why would u be stupid enough to write an opinion piece about how much they suk,
B says
Most Muse music sounds nothing like Radiohead, and they’re a lot better than all the mass produced shit that goes as quickly as it came.
Mongen says
well I went to the MUSE show in Sydney and was blown away, they didnt play my fav song obut the ones they did were done to music and performing perfection. I’ve been to well over 50 shows over the past couple of years and this was the best by far. I guess even Queen, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Elvis had haters…
Ella says

‘All they do is record albums, release singles and tour.’
Excuse me for thinking, but that is what ALL bands do, really. This article is so deluded it’s untrue.
MK says
people say that united states of eurasia sounds like queen.
Steff says
Thankyou. That’s exactly what I was thinking. :)
Randy says
Well, I’ll concede that one small part of that one song sounds a bit Queen-like, but that hardly means that Muse is “aping Queen,” as Amber suggests. We can also pretty much rest assured that Muse knew good and well what they were evoking. I certainly won’t hold that against them. As for the “aping Radiohead” comment, if you’ve read these comments, you know where I and many others stand on that tired argument.
Randy says
Me too….
Lil says
*applause*
And for real, comparing Matt to Thom is like comparing hamburgers to pizza. They’re both awesome but totally different. I’m sure this article has been stashed in the author’s dusty notepad since the mid 90s, just waiting for a day when he has run out of shit to submit before his illiterate arse gets canned cos he spent the previous night fapping to ‘Backstreet Boys Greatest Hits’ instead of actual journalism.
You, sir, are a fool.
Cookie Monster says
Now, I haven’t read the article, nor the comments, and have herd the name “Mutes” or “Muche” perhaps once, yet I do feel that I should express my right, as a user of the Internet, to shed my opinion. My opinion is that I will attempt to download something by this “Musks” group, and then listen to it. If not one of my two 4-month-old babies smiles, I will poop on the ones and zeroes on my hard drive (one poop for the zeroes, a little something for the ones), and call it art. Anyone know if that’s recordable? Maybe a youtube will do? Calling Jackson P. Warhol… hello?

Clearly wanting to get a reaction and has by some. Muse fans, worry not. The fans base speaks for itself, and that is all that needs to be said!

“All they seem to do is constantly record albums, release singles and tour.”
WELL, DUH. THAT’S WHAT PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS DO IN GENERAL. THAT’S LIKE SAYING ALL A DOCTOR DOES IS TREAT PEOPLE FOR ILLNESSES AND OPERATE ON THEM. THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT OF THE JOB, YOU IGNORAMUS.
Oliver J says
My fav band used to be Muse and i would still call my self a slightly obsessive fan. But in 2005 when i first listened to Radiohead it didn’t take long to realise how much better they are. Seriously i disagree with you about as much as the article, i mean look at the critics Radiohead’s Ok Computer was voted best album of the last 25 years the other day and Channel 4 was voted Greatest of all time, Muse are no existent on these lists … take a hint.
Maribeth says
Yeah, Muse is pretty freakin’ epic and this review is “rubbish.” Muse has a unique sound and them starting out as a “tribute to Radiohead” helped them get a lot of Radiohead fans and their style has become more unique and amazing with time.
Maribeth says
Exactly(:
Maribeth says
Well said(:
Skillings says
Hmmm.
And I suppose Every Rock and roll band was once just a Beatles tribute band who one day decided to write their own stuff.
Oh yeah and Beethoven just copied J.S Bach.
People take inspiration from people jackass it’s happened for centuries and will continue to happen.
So unless you are a musician and know how the whole process really works then you aren’t at liberty to criticize it(Intelligently at least)
Maybe you were in a tribute band, maybe you didn’t get to the big stage though.

We all have an opinion and yours is shared by a few people, so I respect that. It isn’t my opinion though. Muse are one of the best bands this country have produced, on a par with Radiohead! You can definitely hear Radioheads influence in Showbiz but after that their sound was and is very unique to them! You know a Muse song within the first 20 seconds of playing! The riffs, Matt’s unmistakeable voice! PURE GENIUS! I do agree that not everyone knows who they are. When I told my mates I was goign to see Muse last they most of them said ‘who?’ However, these guys mostly like 80’s shite so music taste is not their strong point bless them! I think Muse are the biggest band in the world that no one has heard of! I lso think they are like Marmite! You either love em or hate em…..no inbetween! I happen to love Marmite… As for the next album being crap? Lets just wait and see shall we?

Amanda Silva says
This article makes me yawn. Muse is a fantastic band and they’ve always had personality. Only someone who, again, like I’ve recently seen, listens to Iron Maiden or Megadeath or something around those lines have been saying this.
The author has no credibility for anyone to actually read this, and therefore, it is nothing important and everyone arguing here means nothing for no one.
No one will ever see this article except for a bunch of angry fans and that’s all this article is meant to do.
Whatever.
isamartina says
The zetas will get you for posting that.
Cathy says
Is this a joke?
Please tell me this is. The level of jealousy and stupidity from this article is overwhelming.
taylor says
THOU SHALT NOT INSULT MUSE
radiohead tribute band my ass. ok computer is the only record of radiohead’s that sounds remotely similar to muse, and that might be because, oh i don’t know, THEY HAD THE SAME FUCKING PRODUCER!!!
and you’ve obviously never seen any of their older live shows, which are fucking awesome to say the very least, because it wasn’t “just recently” that they’ve gotten “personality injected into them,” lest we forget that they’ve been touring/playing together for almost 20 years now, so needless to say if they had no personality they probably wouldn’t still be selling out wembley stadium….again…and again….and again. their music is more unique than anything else played on the radio (on the rare occasion that they actually get radio play).
seriously you should go to a doctor and have your ears/brain checked. just saying.
arf says
Do you call yourself “journalist”?
Your article is absolutely pathetic.
Lazy journalists, no one sells out 4 nights at wembley stadium, 2 nights at stade de france.
Do you think they headlined glastonbury 2 times just for being crap?
Are you familiarized with the ckham’s razor? Who’s right? You, or millions of Muse fans and supporters?
alex says
in no real way are muse like radio head…i like both bands but muse alot more because of personal preference…muse are a talented band they all play their instruments well and alot of there songs i just love. Yes their next album might not be as good as their older ones but some of the things you said about them in this article are so f stupid.
Steven says
I’m going to find whoever wrote this article, track them down, rip there undersized wewe off and staple it to there head
Chris says
Ahaha you can’t be serious, this entire article is completely ridiculous! The sheer number of Muse supporters or even people who have simply heard Muse is astounding! I went to the September 11th Wembley show last year and I have to say. Best night of my life! The atmosphere created, their INCREDIBLE set design and originality is mind-numbing! Few bands that I like can make their songs sound better than their studio recordings, but listening to Matt Bellamy (my musical inspiration and idol) roam through his blisteringly amazing vocals with his heart piercing falsetto was beautiful! As for the new kids….did you know that their total gross revenue for their “Loved up” songs (assuming you were referring more to The Resistance’s more emotional aspects) album during The Resistance WORLD Tour was $26,300,171…..Damn I wish I were a new kid at school right now….
Dead Star says
LOL U MAD WITH LASERS ?
megan says
ARE YOU FREAKING INSANE? because i know muse are.
i wasnt a fan untill a few years ago, because my dad always used to play them around the house, but once i’d heard ‘supermassive black hole’ i was hooked to their album ‘black holes and revalations’. but then i gave up on listening to them and went back to all the crap pop that these shit so called ‘singers’ get so much credit for.
then last september, came the best night of my life. it was my first ever muse concert and i didnt really want to go because i’d stopped listening to them and so i didnt remember how amazing they are. all i can say about that night is oh my fxcking jesus. matt bellamy, where to even begin? his VOICE!, have you ever heard anyone sing as high as that? i think not. his voice is undeniably beautiful and unreal, and if you are to dissagre, please feel free to look up some of their live performances, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gbj8-KZ69M -thats an amazing one for his voice. the whole atmosphere was well, undescribable. there are no words to describe that night. they’re stage was epic, ive never seen a more overwhelming stage in my life. the lights, the sound, the music, the guitars, the vocals, the addrenaline, the lyrics, the sound clarity, EVERY FRICKING THING about them scream’s out of this world. they are truely special and cannot be described.
also i DARE you to look up some of their more energetic live videos, i’d say go for: plug in baby, new born, stockholm syndrome, uprising, time is running out.
every single little second of each song they’ve done is absolutely incredible and no one on earth can EVER take that away from them. you might not like muse because its not your taste but there is only 3 explanations to why anyone would even think they are not as tallented as they so obviously ARE: 1, you just listened to one of their songs and are still dizzy from their epicness.
2, your just jealous.
and 3, you want to go to hell so you decided pissing off and writing untrue fiction about god aka mathew james bellmay, would get you there.
get a life, get your ears tested. TWATS!
Sophie From The Netherlands says
ok, I don’t know wo wrote this, but he is so fucking stupid. it’s ok to share your opinion and stuff with everyone, but dude; ,,All they seem to do is constantly record albums, release singles and tour.” what the fuck is this? my opinion, this is what bands do. Dumb fuck.
Sorry for crappy english, i’m dutch ^^
Jessica says
Again someone writes crap about Muse. Sigh…I like Muse and Radiohead and both bands produce different music. I find them both talented in thier own way and I think of Radiohead being a lot more mellow than Muse. I am a little worried about their next album though. I remembering hearing somewhere that Kate Hudson wasn’t a big fan of their music and wants him to tone it down in the next album. I don’t know what that means but if it sounds horrible I will stick to listening to their old stuff.
vicky says
i get if you dont like muse that much because they are famous just for that movie twilight, and their songs are about weird stuff like aliens and conspiracy (yeah im not a fan)but you cant say that bullshit cause ALL the bands do that right? otherwise they would have to get another job…
Keren Parnell says
I have liked Radiohead and Muse for many years now. I feel, though, that Matthew Bellamy and the rest of Muse have sold out. They’ve become mainstream, and that’s generally when I stop listening to bands. As for marrying Kate Hudson, WTF? Of course a robot WOULD marry another robot, it’s perfectly un-natural.
Jerry says
What the hell is this fucking paragraph talking about !! Muse is one of the greatest band in the world !!
Oliver Charter says
What fucking idiot wrote this? They’re hardly unheard of! Headlining Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds? 64 weeks in the charts with The Resistance? Not to mention BH&R’s success and Absolution.
Muse supported U2 for fuck sake! They’ve toured the world; with such a huge demand the Resistance tour happened TWICE.
Fuckwit.
