Don’t worry – just a few more weeks and Awards Season will be over, and we can all go back to enjoying films that aren’t worthy, overlong and bone-crushingly serious. But until then – hey, let’s go!
2006 is turning out very much to be the year of the confused homosexual 1970s cowboy. Brokeback Mountain has added to it’s haul of awards at the weekend, when it won the Producers Guild Of America (PGA) award for best movie of the year. What does that mean? It means that Brokeback Mountain is probably going to win a load of Oscars, that’s what.
The PGA Awards are seen as a serious pointer to the results of the
Oscars. 11 of the last 16 PGA best movie winners have gone onto win the
Best Picture Oscar, so things are looking good for Brokeback Mountain –
the winner of this weekend’s PGA award. Brokeback Mountain beat Capote,
Walk The Line, Good Night, And Good Luck and Crash to take the PGA prize.
However, it’s not to say that Brokeback Mountain has got the Oscars
in the bag just yet. The PGA has disagreed with the Oscars before,
claiming that Moulin Rouge! was better than A Beautiful Mind and The
Aviator was better than Million Dollar Baby. But the Oscar hopes of
Brokeback Mountain have also been boosted by the movie’s recent
four-award haul at the Golden Globes. So it might be a good idea not to place too many bets on Son Of The Mask winning many Oscars.
However, Brokeback Mountain wasn’t the only winner at the PGA awards.
Wallace And Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit won Best Animated
Motion Picture, and Lost won Best TV Drama.
You’ll find out what hope Brokeback Mountain has of winning an Oscar
when the Oscar nominations are announced next Tuesday. The Oscars
themselves take place on March 5.
