Yesterday we reported about the Marlon Brando auction at Christie’s in New York, which was expected to raise around $1 million.
It turns out that the auction was a huge draw for movie fans and personal collectors – the total sales of all the lots added up to $2,378,300. As predicted, the most hotly-contended item was an script for The Godfather, annotated by Marlon Brando, which broke records for movie memorabilia.
The script for the 1972 Mafia movie was originally only valued at
$15,000, but eventually went to an anonymous bidder for $312,800, a
profit that would make David Dickinson poo his pants and roll about in
it like a very happy pig. The top price previously paid for a movie
script was $240,000, for Clark Gable‘s copy of Gone With The Wind.
Other Marlon Brando (DVDs) artifacts that went for big money included a
personal letter from Mario Puza, author of The Godfather novel, asking
Brando to consider a role in the film ($132,000) and a note from
Francis Ford Coppola ($28,800). It’s unclear how much the lot of 16 of
Brando’s hats sold for.
Yesterday, we also predicted that Golden Palace Casino would buy a
lot of the memorabilia to add it to their collection of weird celebrity
artifacts. We were wrong – they were too busy buying the jar of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s air from eBay for $530.
