Even though Madonna has been famous for over 20 years, she’s never played at a festival. Weird – we’d have assumed all that yoga training would make her perfect for dodging bottles of piss thrown at her.
But Madonna thinks that the time is right for her to break her festival duck – it’s been announced that she’s going to play the Coachella festival in California. Even better, Madonna is set to play in one of the more intimate tents, allowing fans the rare sight of seeing her pensionable lady-crack cameltoeing wildly against another one of her inappropriate leotards in horrific close-up.
Even though her 48th birthday is looming, Madonna (CDs) seems to be
fighting the ageing process in the only way a slightly out-of-touch
older lady can. She keeps latching herself onto any bizarre trend that
will make her look young and cool. Dance Dance Revolution!
Rollerdiscos! Dancing with cartoons! Hanging out with men young enough
to be her son! Abba!
And now, despite her recent hernia operation, Madonna plans to get
down even further with the kids by playing her first ever festival
date. On April 30, Madonna will appear in the Sahara tent at the
Coachella festival in California – a stage usually headlined by DJs and
other dancey types. In a statement, Madonna said:
"I’ve never performed at a festival. And I’m especially excited about playing at
Coachella before I start my own tour."
Coachella
with Madonna in it looks like it’ll be a win-win situation for
everybody involved. Madonna gets to act like the cool – if sometimes a
little creepy – youthy singer again, instead of the middle aged woman
with alleged marriage difficulties who writes children’s books and
falls off horses that she really is. And people who have paid for tickets to Coachella
will have a real star to go and watch, instead of going to see Daft
Punk and praying they don’t play anything from their last album, or
going to see Depeche Mode and praying they don’t play anything from the
last decade, or going to see Massive Attack and praying that they don’t
play anything except for Unfinished Sympathy.
